The Yamaha YZF R2 has added a new option for riders who want more performance from a small-capacity sportbike. It sits above the R15 in Yamaha’s range and gets a new engine, new frame and a very light body. India is also the first market globally to get this motorcycle.
The R2 uses a new 204cc liquid cooled single cylinder engine. It produces 26.5bhp and 19.1Nm. Yamaha has paired it with ride by wire technology and four riding modes.
The engine is not related to the R15 unit. Yamaha has developed it specifically for the R2 and the low weight makes the motorcycle look interesting on paper.
Weight is one of the biggest talking points here. The standard R2 weighs only 149kg. The higher versions add a little weight and sit around 150kg.
Yamaha has used a new tubular frame instead of the R15’s Deltabox style frame. The new chassis itself saves 2.8kg. The motorcycle also gets a 12 litre fuel tank and an 810mm seat height.
The styling follows Yamaha’s R series family but the R2 has its own shape. The front gets LED projector lights with sharp DRLs. The fairing has large air openings and a squared design.
The R2 gets clip on handlebars and a sporty riding position. The TFT display shows gear position, tachometer and trip information. Ride by wire adds more control over the engine.
Higher versions get a bi directional quickshifter, keyless start and adjustable levers. The R2 M also gets front preload adjustment and its own styling touches.
Prices start at around Rs 2.30 lakh and go up to Rs 2.53 lakh ex showroom. The three variant range gives buyers a choice between basic equipment and more premium features.
The R2 sits in an interesting space. It offers more performance than the R15 without moving into the larger 300cc to 400cc class..
