Jio Platforms’ ₹30,213-crore IPO was subscribed 2.38 times by 3 pm on its first day, 21 October, with institutional buyers bidding for more than seven times their quota while retail investors had taken up about 61% of theirs, according to exchange data compiled by HDFC Sky. The issue, the largest ever attempted in India, stays open until Friday, 23 October.

This is the third piece in our coverage of the offer, after our explainer on the Jio Platforms IPO terms and price band and our report on the record demand in the Jio anchor book. Here we look at what the first day of public bidding shows, what it does not, and what to watch before the book closes.

Jio Platforms IPO subscription on day 1: the numbers

Bidding opened at 10 am. Business Standard reported that by 10:34 am the issue was subscribed 1.01 times, with bids for about 19.99 crore shares against roughly ₹22,078 crore of shares on offer at the top of the price band. An IANS report carried by Telangana Today, citing BSE data, said the qualified institutional buyer (QIB) portion was fully subscribed within 10 minutes and the whole issue within about 100 minutes. An ANI report published by The Tribune, using NSE data, put subscription at 1.27 times by late morning, with 13.56 lakh applications.

The timing claims differ slightly between outlets because each used a different exchange feed and snapshot. All agree the book was covered before noon.

Category (excluding anchors) Shares offered Subscription at ~11:55 am Subscription at 3 pm
Qualified institutional buyers 4.90 crore 3.92x 7.09x
Non-institutional investors 3.64 crore 0.46x 1.06x
Retail investors 8.50 crore 0.37x 0.61x
Employees 0.47 crore 0.84x 1.17x
Reliance shareholders 2.23 crore 0.68x 1.15x
Total 19.75 crore 1.31x 2.38x

The 11:55 am figures are from Goodreturns; the 3 pm figures are from HDFC Sky. At 3 pm, total bids stood at about 46.95 crore shares, worth roughly ₹52,500 crore at the ₹1,119 cap by our calculation. These are intraday snapshots; final day-one numbers are published by the exchanges after bidding closes at 5 pm.

Why institutions moved first

The anchor book set the tone

Two days earlier, Jio allotted 7.25 crore shares at ₹1,119 each to 212 anchor investors, raising ₹8,109.85 crore, Business Standard reported. LIC was the largest single anchor at ₹499.98 crore, and 95 mutual fund schemes from 25 fund houses took ₹2,784.96 crore, or 34.34% of the anchor portion. Upstox listed the Government of Singapore among the larger allottees. With global and domestic funds already committed at the top of the band, other institutions had a clear price signal before the public book opened.

A price below earlier expectations

At the cap, Jio is valued at about $108 billion, IANS reported. As our earlier analysis noted, that is below the higher valuations floated before the price band was set.

Retail usually bids late

Retail and high-net-worth demand was slower in the morning. IIFL’s live page showed retail at about 0.25 times at 10:41 am, and its own commentary called retail and NII demand weaker than expected at that stage. By 3 pm the retail figure had more than doubled to 0.61 times. Individual investors often wait for the final day, so day-one retail figures are an incomplete guide.

Structure: who gets what

The offer is entirely a fresh issue of up to 27 crore shares, with no existing shareholder selling, according to Upstox and HDFC Sky. The proceeds go mainly to repaying debt at Reliance Jio Infocomm. Reliance’s 14 October filing to the stock exchanges confirms the ₹1,065–1,119 price band, the 12-share minimum bid and a ₹54-per-share discount for eligible employees.

The share counts in the exchange data match the usual split of the net offer: about 50% for QIBs (including anchors), 15% for non-institutional investors and 35% for retail. Separate quotas of about 2.23 crore shares for Reliance shareholders and about 47 lakh shares for employees sit outside that split. At the cap, the minimum retail application is ₹13,428.

What the Jio IPO means for Reliance and the wider market

Reliance Industries shares rose as much as 2.68% intraday to ₹1,234.30 on the NSE, IANS reported.

For the wider market, a ₹30,000-crore fresh issue absorbs a large pool of money in one week. Strong institutional demand eases the worry that the offer would drain liquidity from other stocks at a time when foreign investors have pulled a record amount from Indian shares this year. Those most exposed to how the issue ends are:

  • Other IPO candidates and their bankers. A well-received record issue would usually support the pipeline. A weak finish or listing would do the opposite.
  • Mutual funds and insurers. They already hold large anchor allocations, which are locked in for a period after listing under SEBI rules, so the listing price affects reported returns.
  • Retail and Reliance-shareholder applicants. Heavy oversubscription in these quotas would mean smaller or lottery-based allotments.

Grey-market quotes, which are unofficial and unregulated, pointed to a listing premium of about 24% on Wednesday morning, IIFL reported, slightly below the previous day’s peak. These figures can change quickly and are not a reliable guide to the listing price.

Scenarios to watch

These are conditional scenarios, not predictions.

If… Then it would likely mean…
Retail and Reliance-shareholder quotas are several times oversubscribed by Friday Broad public participation; allotment for small applicants becomes largely a lottery
QIB demand keeps rising but retail stays near or below 1x The issue is carried by institutions; retail caution on price or market conditions
Markets fall sharply or crude oil spikes before Friday Late non-institutional and retail bids could slow, though institutional cover is already in place
Strong listing on 28 October Supports sentiment for India’s IPO pipeline and Reliance’s holding value

What to watch next

  • Final day-one and day-two subscription figures from BSE and NSE.
  • The close on Friday, 23 October, when retail bids usually peak.
  • Basis of allotment on 26 October, refunds and demat credit on 27 October, and the expected listing on 28 October, according to HDFC Sky and Upstox.

Bottom line

The Jio Platforms IPO cleared its first test within hours. Institutions covered their quota several times over on day one, and the whole book was covered before noon. The open questions are how far individual investors join in by Friday, and whether the listing price supports the ₹1,119 valuation that institutions have already accepted.

Method note: We compared day-one subscription data reported by Business Standard, HDFC Sky, Goodreturns, IIFL, Upstox, and the ANI and IANS agencies (via The Tribune and Telangana Today), and checked offer terms against Reliance Industries’ 14 October filing to the stock exchanges. Where intraday figures differed, we used time-stamped snapshots.
