CATL, the world’s largest maker of electric-vehicle batteries, reported third-quarter net profit up just 14.5% to 21.25 billion yuan, its slowest growth in nearly two years, even as revenue jumped almost 59%. The company is selling far more batteries but keeping less of each yuan it earns.

CATL Q3 results: what the numbers show

In a stock exchange filing on 20 October, CATL said net profit attributable to shareholders for July to September rose 14.54% from a year earlier to 21.25 billion yuan (about $3.17 billion), Reuters reported. Analysts had expected growth of about 41%, according to LSEG SmartEstimate data cited by Reuters. Revenue rose 58.58% to 165.22 billion yuan, slightly short of the roughly 60% increase forecast.

Profit also fell about 5.8% from the second quarter’s 22.55 billion yuan, CnEVPost calculated. Net profit excluding one-off items was 18.86 billion yuan, up 14.86%.

For the first nine months, revenue was 442.14 billion yuan, up 56.2%, and net profit was 64.53 billion yuan, up 31.6%, matching the company’s nine-month earnings summary.

  • Gross margin: 20.69% in the third quarter, down from 25.80% a year earlier and 23.15% in the second quarter, the lowest since late 2022, according to Sina Finance and China EV Home.
  • Nine-month gross margin: 22.72%, down about 2.6 percentage points, as cost of sales rose 61.6%, faster than revenue (CnEVPost).
  • Cash flow: operating cash flow for nine months fell 23.6% to 61.63 billion yuan, while receivables rose 47.8% and inventories 53.2% from the end of 2025.

On 20 October CATL’s Shenzhen-listed shares fell 2.97% and its Hong Kong shares 6.58%, the latter touching their lowest level in more than a year, Sina Finance reported. JPMorgan cut its rating on the Hong Kong shares to neutral from overweight, according to the same report.

Why CATL’s profit growth slowed

A new battery consumption tax

The clearest new cost is a tax. Under Announcement No. 20 of 2026 from China’s Ministry of Finance, customs administration and tax authority, dated 16 July, lithium-ion storage batteries and several other battery types became subject to a 2% consumption tax from 1 September 2026, rising to 4% from 1 September 2027. Sodium-ion and solid-state batteries are exempt until the end of 2028, provided they meet national standards.

CATL’s taxes and surcharges in the quarter were 2.21 billion yuan, up 1.62 billion yuan from a year earlier, which Sina Finance linked to the new levy.

Price competition and raw materials

Reuters attributed the slowdown to fierce competition in the battery market and a cooling Chinese car market, which extended a 12-month downturn in September while exports kept the industry growing. Sina Finance noted that battery prices have not kept pace with higher input costs, with lithium carbonate spiking above 210,000 yuan a tonne in June before easing.

Market share: two different pictures

Sources measure CATL’s position differently. Globally, CATL’s share of EV battery usage rose to 39.4% in January to August from 37.7% a year earlier, while BYD’s fell to 15.1%, Reuters reported citing industry data. At home, China EV Home cited a nine-month share of 44.16%, but Reuters said CATL’s monthly share of Chinese installations dropped to 40.9% in September from 49.8% in January as BYD’s rose to 21.1%. The monthly data suggest rivals are gaining ground at home.

This comes against a slowing domestic backdrop: China’s economy grew 4.5% in the third quarter, carried by exports while consumers held back, as we covered in our analysis of China’s two-speed recovery.

What CATL is betting on

Management argued at an earnings briefing on 21 October that global demand for power and storage batteries “may not be as pessimistic” as the market expects, citing more electric commercial vehicles, continuing electrification in Europe and strong storage demand outside China, BigGo Finance reported.

Energy storage is the main growth lever. CATL expects storage to make up half its revenue by 2030, up from about a quarter now, Reuters reported. The company also unveiled a new generation of heavy-truck batteries and plans to expand battery swapping; NetEase reported a target of 900 heavy-truck swap stations by the end of 2026, 2,000 in 2027 and 10,000 over the long term, and a swapping partnership with Huawei’s Yinwang unit.

How it affects businesses and India

CATL’s margins act as a gauge of pricing power across the battery chain. Three general patterns matter:

  • Carmakers and storage developers buying Chinese cells may face pressure to share the tax cost. JPMorgan, cited by Sina Finance, described this as a redistribution of profit along the supply chain rather than a classic price war, and expects smaller battery makers to be hit harder than CATL.
  • Battery buyers outside China, including Indian EV and storage companies that rely on imported cells, will be watching whether higher domestic taxes in China feed through to export prices. How much reaches overseas buyers depends on contract terms that are not public.
  • Competing chemistries such as sodium-ion and solid-state get a relative cost edge in China because of the exemption until 2028.

Rising input costs are a common theme this results season: General Motors also flagged metal and memory-chip costs as a concern for 2027. China’s broader push to control technology exports, set out in its draft controls on 40 technologies, adds another layer of uncertainty for foreign buyers of Chinese battery know-how.

Scenarios to watch

The table below sets out conditional scenarios, not predictions.

If this happens Possible effect Signal to watch
CATL passes most of the consumption tax to customers Margins could stabilise; carmakers’ costs rise Fourth-quarter gross margin versus 20.69%
Domestic share losses continue Pressure on pricing in China persists Monthly installation data for CATL and BYD
Storage demand outside China stays strong Storage share of revenue rises toward the 2030 goal Storage shipments and overseas orders
Lithium prices climb again Further squeeze if battery prices lag Lithium carbonate spot prices

What to watch next

  • Fourth-quarter results, the first full quarter with the 2% battery tax.
  • Monthly Chinese battery installation data for signs of whether BYD and others keep gaining share.
  • The scheduled rise of the tax to 4% on 1 September 2027.

Bottom line

CATL’s third quarter shows a company still growing fast in volume and holding its global lead, but facing thinner margins from a new tax, tougher domestic competition and costly inputs. Whether it can pass those costs on, and how fast storage grows, will decide if this quarter was a dip or the start of a lower-margin phase.

Method note: This analysis compared reporting from Reuters (via KFGO), CnEVPost, China EV Home, Sina Finance, NetEase and BigGo Finance, the company’s nine-month earnings summary on MarketScreener, and the Chinese government’s battery consumption tax announcement on the State Taxation Administration website. CATL’s own filing on the Shenzhen and Hong Kong exchanges could not be accessed directly; figures were cross-checked across at least two independent outlets.
