Wheelchair Basketball Canada has announced its women's and men's rosters for the upcoming world championships in Ottawa.
The women's side will have veterans Kady Dandeneau, Melanie Hawtin, Puisand Lai, Tara Llanes, Cindy Ouellet, Tamara Steeves, Elodie Tessier and Arinn Young return from the fourth-place Paralympic team in 2024. Elise Froese, Rosie Long, Mercy Nyakundi and Bethany Johnson were also named to the team.
Canada placed fifth at the 2022 championships and last stood on the podium in 2014 when the women won gold in Toronto.
On the men's side, there are seven returnees from both the Paralympic Games and 2022 worlds: Reed De'Aeth, Nik Goncin, Colin Higgins, Lee Melymick, Tyler Miller, Blaise Mutware and Garrett Ostepchuk. They are joined by Josh Brown, Ibrahim Odza, Kyrell Sopotyk, Lionel Tamoki and Brandon Louie.
The Canadian men, which finished sixth at the 2022 worlds, last won gold in 2006.
The tournament will run from Sept. 9-19 and will determine the number of spots each zone will receive for the 2028 Paralympic Games.
