One of the most beloved hidden gems of the 16-bit era is finally making its long-awaited comeback. Publisher Clear River Games has officially announced that Terranigma will return for modern platforms, with releases planned for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC in early 2027.

The announcement came out during the Pixel Arcadia retro showcase, bringing renewed attention to Quintet’s legendary 1995 action RPG. Although Terranigma earned widespread praise for its emotional storytelling and memorable gameplay, it arrived during the transition to 32-bit consoles and never received an official North American release. Over the years, that rarity helped it achieve near-mythical status among retro gaming fans.

Terranigma follows Ark, a young boy tasked with restoring life to Earth. The adventure spans the planet’s evolution from its earliest beginnings to the modern world, blending fast-paced action with a heartfelt narrative that has remained unforgettable for generations of players. Its distinctive visual style, created by acclaimed manga artist Kamui Fujiwara, remains one of the game’s defining features.

This new edition preserves the original’s gorgeous pixel art and melancholic soundtrack while introducing gameplay refinements, quality-of-life improvements, and additional bonus content to make the classic more accessible for today’s audience.

Clear River Games also confirmed that Kamui Fujiwara is actively involved in the project, contributing brand-new key artwork, in-game designs, and creative feedback throughout development.

For longtime fans and newcomers alike, 2027 looks set to be the perfect time to experience one of retro gaming’s greatest adventures.
