After Gloria Steinem’s death at age 92 on Sept. 2, Meghan Markle paid tribute to the late activist with a never-before-seen photo featuring her and Prince Harry’s son Archie.
Meghan Markle knows friend Gloria Steinem’s legacy remains strong as ever.
In light of the feminist icon’s death at age 92, the duchess posting a touching tribute Sept. 3 alongside a photo featuring her and Prince Harry’s 7-year-old son Archie.
“Celebrating the life and legacy of my friend and mentor, Gloria Steinem, and also grateful to know that in these last few weeks and days she knew exactly how loved and admired she was,” Markle wrote in a Sept. 2 Instagram post. “You all know her many accolades and the way in which she helped shape the world for women and all people—‘we are linked, not ranked’ she would tell me, and the bracelet she gave me said exactly that. I still wear it with pride.”
Alongside the thoughtful words about the activist’s life mission, Markle—also mom to daughter Lilibet, 5, with Harry—provided a peek into their bond, including one framed photo of the activist placing a hand on a toddler-aged Archie’s back.
Another image sees Markle and the longtime journalist—who continued to film several interviews discussing women’s issues—sitting together in Adirondack chairs on a beautiful lawn, while the third and final image filtered in black and white featured the duo sitting together on a couch.
And while Markle noted that she and the Ms. magazine founder had a very public-facing relationship to encourage young voters and brainstormed “how to help this beautiful yet complicated world to become more equitable,” she noted she was far more touched by their private bond.
“She was even better than you would imagine—spending Thanksgiving with our family, introducing me to one of my best friends (forever the champion of female friendship),” Markle mused. “Loving our children with her whole heart, counseling me during hard times, and giving extraordinary advice and perspective with a cup of tea and an unrivaled cheekiness and wit.”
On Sept. 3, Steinem’s team confirmed that she had died one day earlier in her New York City home surrounded by loved ones.
“Gloria’s near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end,” her team wrote in a statement. “Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves. Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humor.”
