Nothing screams Fortnite like the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, am I right?

Fortnite and Focus Features announced Wednesday that the new movie The Uprising, starring Andrew Garfield, is now available to play as a custom experience on Fortnite ahead of the Paul Greengrass-directed film’s theatrical release on September 10.

Even for Fortnite – which has a long history of pop cultural collaborations including Star Wars, Marvel, DC, LEGO, The Witcher, Godzilla and Kong, Stranger Things, John Wick, and Back to the Future – The Uprising is a curious film to cross over with.

The period drama – which may or may not (still) be a Robin Hood origin movie – chronicles the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, which was led by historical figures Wat Tyler (played by Shogun’s Cosmo Jarvis) and John Ball (played by Jamie Bell). Andrew Garfield’s lead character, Ploughman, is meant to represent the Everyman peasant pushed by misfortune into taking up arms against the crown.

According to the official announcement, “the free Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) experience, developed by Sawhorse Productions and published by Genesis Studios, immerses players in the heart of the legendary uprising, bringing the film's world to life through a large-scale multiplayer battle inspired by the events and visual landscape of The Uprising.”

“Set in 1380s England, the custom 5v5 payload-escort experience pits Rebels against Kingsmen in a battle for London’s gates. Rebel forces must push a battering-ram through four escalating map phases, advancing from muddy farmland to the fortified city walls, while Kingsmen fight to stop their advance before time expires. Players wield era-inspired melee weapons and bows, earn in-match currency and strategically upgrade their health, speed, and damage throughout the fight.”

Fortnite and Focus say The Uprising experience “culminates in film-inspired cinematic endings unique to each outcome, allowing players to uncover another layer of The Uprising’s story whether they emerge victorious as Rebels or successfully defend the kingdom as Kingsmen.”
