Prime Video’s God of War video game adaptation has not gone on without some bumps in the road, but development on the show continues.

First eyed for a TV series adaptation by the producing studios in March 2022, the casting for the show gained momentum at the beginning of January 2026 after some creative shuffling.

For everything we know about Prime Video’s God of War adaptation, read on.

When will Prime Video’s God of War show come out?

A date has not yet been set for the show’s release.

Is Prime Video’s God of War in production?

Yes, though the shoot had some complications when Ryan Hurst sustained a serious injury four months into shooting. Pre-production began at the end of 2025. The plan remains to film two seasons back to back.

Who is in the cast of Prime Video’s God of War show?

Ryan Hurst was originally cast as Kratos, the titular character of the video game. Kratos is a Spartan by birth and a god by nature, raised in martial culture. After rising in the ranks and commanding armies to protect his homeland, he made a fateful deal with the Greek God of War, Ares, exchanging his soul for being victorious in battle.

Following Hurst’s tearing a bicep while performing a stunt during production in June, as first reported by TMZ, Deadline reported that the role of Kratos was being recast. Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM reached out to Dave Bautista to initiate talks shortly after they made the decision to recast the role.

Bautista, who is known for portraying Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy film trilogy and for more recently voicing Tagah in Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, closed his deal to take on the role in late August after reports that he was in talks started circulating at the beginning of the month.

Following Hurst’s casting as Kratos, Deadline broke the news that Teresa Palmer (A Discovery of Witches, Warm Bodies) was cast as Phoebe/Sif, wife of Thor and goddess of family.

Max Parker (Boots), will star as Heimdall, the Watchman of Asgard and one of Odin’s sons. Heimdall is a god in his own right, and he has the ability to anticipate what might happen in any moment. He’s constantly looking fore ways to improve his status and position in the hierarchy because he feels unappreciated by his father. Heimdall first appears in the second God of War game, God of War Ragnarök.

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will portray Thor in the mythology-themed video game adaptation, as Deadline first reported. The God of Thunder is haunted by the price he paid in a war he fought long ago, making him a shadow of his former self who resorts to alcohol to escape what haunts him. He was once loyal to Asgard and his father’s right-hand man. He keeps his wife and children at arm’s length, further isolating himself, but his power lurks beneath the surface.
