Swampy underarms are a common symptom of summer heat, and to combat it, you need a strong deodorant or antiperspirant. Aluminum deodorants, also known as antiperspirant deodorants, are a great option for anyone dealing with excessive sweat and stubborn body odor, since they do the double-duty of reducing odor and helping to block sweat glands, which reduces perspiration and odor-causing bacteria overall. While not all deodorants stop sweat, all aluminum deodorants are antiperspirants as well, since they include aluminum salts, which is the key ingredient used for blocking sweat in antiperspirants.
Although aluminum formulas have drawn scrutiny in the past for perceived links to cancer, particularly breast cancer, it’s important to note that the fears aren’t exactly based in fact. According to the American Cancer Society, there is no strong scientific evidence to prove the link between aluminum and cancer in deodorants, maintaining it as a safe option for underarm sweat prevention.

This antiperspirant has been my go-to formula for years, since it helps reduce my heavy sweating, even during the hot, swampy summertime. I use it everywhere — the gym, beach, office and more. Dr. Marisa Garshick, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York City and an assistant clinical professor of dermatology, especially recommends it for controlling excessive sweat or stubborn odor — “it uses a higher concentration of aluminum compounds than standard antiperspirants, which translates to improved sweat control,” she says. It also goes on smoothly, lasts up to 100 hours, and dries down invisibly with no residue.

If you sweat heavily, Garshick recommends this prescription-strength, over-the-counter option (unless you have sensitive skin). Its active ingredient is aluminum chloride, which is one of the strongest aluminum salts. For best results, Garshick recommends applying the antiperspirant at night to clean, dry skin, which helps minimize chances of irritation.
This dry deodorant spray creates a lightweight micro-barrier over your underarms that helps protect against odor and sweat, which helps increase longevity and effectiveness, says Garshick. She also likes that it has a non-sticky finish and absorbs quickly into the skin.
Sweat wipes are great for on-the-go sweat control, and these aluminum antiperspirant wipes can help reduce sweating by 90% in as little as two weeks, according to the brand. The wipes temporarily block your sweat ducts, and dry down quickly with no wet or sticky residue left behind. We’ve tested dozens of deodorants and antiperspirants over the years at NBC Selected, evaluating them based on effectiveness when stopping sweat and odor, which is what I’ve largely based my picks on. I’ve also asked dermatologists for guidance on how to choose an aluminum deodorant based on ingredients and skin type, and used their advice when making my selections.
When shopping for an aluminum deodorant of your own, Garshick recommends keeping in mind your formula preference and your skin type.
Aluminum deodorants are available in a few different types, and since all are effective in stopping sweat, experts say your choice will largely depend on personal preference.
Most skin types can tolerate over-the-counter aluminum deodorants, however, if you have sensitive skin, you should look for formulas that are fragrance-free or made without scented/essential oils, says Garshick. Since both are common skin irritants, they can lead to rashes or reactions in more sensitive skin types — instead, consider formulas with moisturizing ingredients or lower concentrations of aluminum salts.
Deodorant masks body odor, while antiperspirant contains aluminum compounds to stop sweat and odor-causing bacteria. “Deodorants improve the smell of sweat by targeting odor, acidity, and bacteria, but they do not impact how much sweat is produced,” says Dr. Michele Green, a board-certified dermatologist, in our guide to deodorants and antiperspirants. However, if you’re most concerned about excessive sweating, experts recommend sticking to an antiperspirant.
