If a goat screams to “I Knew You Were Trouble” in a YouTube video, would it still scream if “I Knew You Were Trouble” was actually a sad ballad? That could’ve been our reality. Taylor Swift casually dropped that she originally brought the song to Max Martin and Shellback as a “really, really sad ballad.” It would’ve sounded more like Sabrina Carpenter’s cover of the song. “I was like, ‘I’m thinking no drums,’ and they’re like, ‘What if it’s dubstep?’” she explained at The Icon Session at the Grammy Museum last week. “I was like, ‘I don’t know guys. Let’s give it a run.’” She then shared how their suggestion became a blessing in disguise and a lesson in saying “yes and” to her collaborations and trusting their intuition. Swift added, “I came to them specifically because I didn’t want to be making lateral moves creatively. Why wouldn’t we go down that path? Like why wouldn’t we? I really think that enthusiasm in the studio can really make or break what you end up creating.” So true, Taylor. Do not break the screaming goat up by making a sad ballad.
