A man has been charged after police allegedly found 3.5g of methamphetamine concealed inside a bacon and egg McMuffin during a vehicle stop in Broome.
Senior Constable Ben Lucas discussed the unusual discovery on the WA Police Confidential podcast.
He said Broome detectives had been conducting surveillance at an address
of interest as part of an operation targeting the sale and supply of illicit drugs in the West Kimberley.
“It certainly wasn’t random,” Lucas said.
Detectives allegedly saw a vehicle arrive at the address and a man walk towards the property. The vehicle left before collecting the man a short time later, Lucas told WA Police Confidential.
Officers stopped the vehicle several streets away and searched its occupants under Western Australia’s Misuse of Drugs Act.
During a search of the vehicle, officers found a bag of Chicken Treat, a Western Australian fast-food chain, on the rear floor.
Lucas said the bag contained “fresh, hot, warm, lovely-smelling Chicken Treat”, but officers noticed a cold Bacon and Egg McMuffin hidden at the bottom.
“It was cold and it was wedged in between the hot food,” he said.
“That, obviously, drew our attention.”
When police unwrapped the McMuffin, they allegedly discovered a bag containing about 3.5g of methamphetamine between the bacon and egg.
Lucas said the unusual hiding place caught detectives by surprise.
“I thought that was a funny packet of salt, but it’s obviously meth,” Lucas quipped.
WA Police said officers stopped the vehicle in Cable Beach about 2.10pm on August 20.
A 39-year-old Derby man was charged with possessing a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply.
