The Sensex jumped 1,225 points, or 1.62%, to 76,917.85 on Tuesday, 3 November, its fourth straight gain, as consumer stocks, private banks and talk of capital gains tax relief for foreign investors lifted Indian shares.

How the Sensex and Nifty moved today

The BSE Sensex closed up 1,225.07 points at 76,917.85 and the Nifty 50 rose 370.05 points, or 1.58%, to 23,810.85, according to an IANS report carried by Punjab Kesari and the closing figures published by ChiniMandi. Both match a previous Sensex close of 75,692.78. The Nifty has now gained nearly 5% in four sessions, its best run in seven months, NewsBytes reported.

The broader market lagged. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 1.06% and the Smallcap 100 0.31%, IANS said. The India VIX volatility gauge edged up 1.09% to 15.67, ChiniMandi reported, and the rupee firmed to 94.74 a dollar from 94.90.

Sectors and stocks

Consumer goods led. ChiniMandi put the Nifty FMCG index up 2.5%, while IANS and NewsBytes described the gain as close to 3%; the sources differ slightly on the exact figure. Realty rose 2.2% and private banks 1.78%. PSU banks (-0.92%), metals (-0.59%) and energy (-0.4%) fell, a reversal from Monday, when refiners and metals led the Reliance-driven Sensex rally.

BSE Ltd, Tata Consumer Products, Asian Paints, Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank were among the top Nifty gainers, while Infosys, SBI, ONGC, Power Grid and NTPC were among the losers, ChiniMandi said. SBI slipped after its Q2 results, which showed profit up 14%. Exchange stocks were active: NewsBytes reported BSE up about 5% and MCX up about 8% ahead of its results.

Why the Sensex rallied for a fourth day

1. Capital gains tax relief talk

The biggest new factor was a report that the market regulator wants to remove long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax for foreign portfolio investors. Reuters reported on 2 November, citing two sources, that SEBI had proposed exempting foreign investors’ gains on equity held for over a year, and also asked for relief for mutual fund investors who switch schemes, according to an ANI report carried by The Tribune. Business Standard noted the proposals are part of SEBI’s pre-Budget representations, are not binding, and the final decision rests with the government before the February 2027 Budget.

Today the rate is 12.5% on long-term equity gains and 20% on short-term gains. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on 13 October that she was open to hearing stakeholder views on LTCG and securities transaction tax (STT), Kotak Neo reported. That followed a Budget in which the government raised STT on futures from 0.02% to 0.05% and on options to 0.15%, according to the government’s New India Samachar Budget summary and PRS Legislative Research. No tax change has been announced.

2. Earnings, led by consumer companies

Marico was a standout. Its Q2 FY27 profit rose 29% to ₹558 crore on revenue up 13% to ₹3,897 crore, and it raised its FY27 EBITDA growth guidance to the mid-20s percent from high teens, Business Standard reported. The shares rose about 9%, NewsBytes said, helping the FMCG index.

3. Rotation away from AI stocks and lower oil

Global money has been leaving AI-linked technology shares, with the Nasdaq 100 entering a correction this week. IANS said some of that money is moving toward traditional sectors and other markets, including India. Before the open, Business Standard noted South Korea’s KOSPI was down 2.4% on AI-spending worries. Brent crude also stayed near $105 a barrel after Monday’s 7.6% plunge, which helps India as a large oil importer. A Whalesbook report said the rally added nearly ₹4 lakh crore to the value of BSE-listed companies by midday.

How it affects India and businesses

The rally comes after a long period of foreign selling. Foreign investors withdrew ₹34,843 crore from Indian shares in October and about ₹2.95 lakh crore in 2026 to the end of October, Business Standard said, citing depository data. They turned net buyers of about ₹6,300 crore in the last week of October. Over two years, the Nifty fell 4.8% while the MSCI emerging markets index rose 40%, the Reuters report noted.

Brokers caution that tax relief alone may not reverse that. Business Today reported JM Financial’s estimate that removing LTCG would add about 2.2 percentage points to a foreign investor’s average yearly dollar return, small next to valuation effects, and could add $3 to 5 billion to inflows in its bull case. Jefferies flagged a revenue cost, noting equity LTCG collections of ₹1.3 lakh crore in FY25, Business Standard said. That matters for a government watching its fiscal deficit.

A firmer rupee and lower oil help importers and companies with dollar debt. Consumer firms benefit if lower fuel costs ease input prices and support spending.

Who is more or less exposed

  • More exposed to a tax change: large, heavily foreign-owned stocks such as private banks, and exchanges and brokers whose volumes depend on trading activity.
  • Helped by lower oil: FMCG, paint, aviation and auto companies with crude-linked costs.
  • Less helped today: PSU banks, metals, energy and IT exporters, which fell or lagged.
  • Exposed to a reversal: a rally partly driven by an unconfirmed policy proposal could fade if the government signals no change.

Scenarios to watch

The table below sets out conditional scenarios, not predictions.

If… Then a plausible outcome is…
The government confirms it is studying LTCG relief Foreign buying could continue, but the Budget is three months away
The Finance Ministry rules out a change Part of the tax-driven gain could reverse
Oil rises again on fresh Gulf attacks Consumer and rupee-sensitive stocks could give back gains
The AI sell-off in US and Asian markets deepens India could gain from rotation, or be hit by wider risk aversion

What to watch next

  • Any Finance Ministry comment on SEBI’s LTCG proposal.
  • Daily foreign investor flow data, to see if the late-October buying continues.
  • US midterm election results and their effect on global risk appetite.
  • Q2 results this week from Bajaj Finserv, Lupin, MCX and others.
  • Brent crude and the rupee.

Bottom line

The Sensex rose 1,225 points for a fourth straight gain, with the Nifty up nearly 5% in four days. Consumer earnings, lower oil and a shift away from AI stocks helped, but much of the new enthusiasm rests on a SEBI tax proposal the government has not yet accepted. Whether the rally lasts depends on foreign flows and on what the Budget actually does.

Method note: This analysis compared closing data reported by IANS (via Punjab Kesari), ChiniMandi and NewsBytes; tax and flow reporting from Business Standard, the Reuters report carried by ANI and The Tribune, Business Today and Kotak Neo; Marico results reported by Business Standard; and the government’s Budget summary in New India Samachar with PRS Legislative Research. Sector percentages differ slightly between sources and are attributed. The SEBI proposal is reported, not confirmed by the government.
