Maruti Suzuki dispatched a record 276,120 vehicles in October 2026, up 25% from a year earlier, as India’s festive season pushed four of the largest carmakers to monthly highs. Hyundai, Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle business and Mahindra also reported their best-ever months, though the pace of growth differed sharply between them.

October 2026 auto sales: what the carmakers reported

The figures released on 1 November are factory dispatches to dealers (wholesales), not retail sales to customers. Even so, the scale of the jump stands out.

  • Maruti Suzuki: total dispatches of 276,120 units against 220,894 in October 2025, according to Autocar Professional. Domestic passenger vehicles rose 20% to 212,384, utility vehicles rose 26% to 97,787 and exports jumped 59% to 49,872. The October 2025 base matches the company’s official release for that month, which was itself a record at the time.
  • Hyundai Motor India: 82,299 units, up 17.7%, its highest monthly total, ANI reported. Domestic sales rose 16.7% to 62,799 and exports rose 21.1% to 19,500. Auto Punditz noted the previous record was 77,916 units in September 2026 and that the Venue alone sold 13,017 units at home.
  • Tata Motors (passenger vehicles): 75,426 units, up 23% from 61,295, with domestic sales of 73,894 and electric vehicle sales up 75% to 16,244, according to Auto India Daily. EVs made up roughly 21.5% of the total.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra: a record 73,338 domestic SUVs and total automotive sales of 131,109, up 9%, Rushlane reported. SUV growth, however, was only about 2% against 71,624 units in October 2025, a figure confirmed by Mahindra’s own release from last year.

On these wholesale numbers, Tata’s domestic passenger vehicle dispatches were about 556 units ahead of Mahindra’s domestic SUV count, keeping the race for second place extremely close. Taken together, domestic dispatches at Maruti, Tata and Mahindra rose about 16% to 359,616 units, a FutureKnowledge calculation from the reported figures.

Why October was so strong

Three forces appear to be at work. First, festive timing. Dussehra fell in October, and dealers stock up ahead of Diwali, which this year falls in November rather than October. Mahindra’s farm equipment head attributed a 13% fall in domestic tractor sales to exactly that calendar shift, Rushlane reported, which suggests some retail demand will only show up in November figures.

Second, order books. Auto India Daily, citing a Financial Express report, said Maruti’s pending bookings rose from about 2 lakh at the start of October to around 2.7 lakh after Dussehra. Dispatching that backlog lifts wholesales regardless of what happens at the showroom this week.

Third, exports. Maruti’s overseas shipments rose 59%, Hyundai’s 21% and Mahindra’s total automotive exports 77%, per the reports above. India is increasingly a production base for global markets, and that cushions makers against swings in domestic demand.

How it affects India and businesses

Strong vehicle dispatches feed into several parts of the economy at once: component suppliers, steel and tyre makers, auto lenders, insurers and state tax revenue. The October numbers sit alongside a 22.9% rise in October GST collections to ₹2.31 lakh crore, another sign of busy festive spending.

For the carmakers themselves, volume is only half the story. As we noted in our coverage of Maruti Suzuki’s Q2 results, where profit fell 27%, higher sales do not automatically translate into higher margins when discounts, costs and product mix move against a company. October’s record dispatches will be tested against December-quarter earnings.

Commercial vehicles also grew. Tata’s commercial vehicle business reported sales of 47,652 units, up 27%, with international volumes more than tripling, according to TaxGuru and Investywise. That business is also pursuing its €3.9 billion Iveco takeover.

Who is more or less exposed

  • More exposed to festive timing: makers and dealers whose volumes depend heavily on the Diwali window, including tractor makers, as Mahindra’s farm numbers show.
  • Less dependent on domestic demand: companies with large export shares, such as Hyundai (about a quarter of October volume went overseas) and Maruti, whose exports reached nearly 50,000 units.
  • Facing tougher comparisons: companies that already had a record October in 2025. Mahindra’s slower 2% SUV growth reflects a high base, not a fall in volumes.
  • EV-led growth: Tata’s 75% EV growth shows electric models are now a material part of its volume, which also makes it more sensitive to battery costs and charging policy.

Scenarios to watch

The table below sets out conditional scenarios, not predictions.

If this happens Possible effect Signal to watch
November retail registrations stay strong after Diwali October dispatches look justified and dealer stock stays healthy Vahan registrations and FADA’s monthly retail report
Retail lags behind wholesale Dealer inventory builds; dispatches could slow in December Dealer inventory days and discounting levels
Export momentum continues Volumes stay high even if domestic demand cools Monthly export figures from Maruti, Hyundai and Mahindra
Costs or discounts rise faster than volume Margins in the December quarter may not match sales growth Commodity prices and Q3 FY27 earnings commentary

What to watch next

  • Two-wheeler numbers from Bajaj Auto, TVS, Hero MotoCorp and Royal Enfield, which had not all been published at the time of writing. Bajaj’s recent Q2 results showed exports driving profit.
  • Retail data for October and November, which will show how much of the wholesale surge reached customers.
  • Whether Mahindra’s tractor sales recover in November once Diwali demand arrives, which the company’s festive-calendar explanation implies.
  • Auto shares when markets open on Monday 2 November, the first trading session after these figures.

Bottom line

October 2026 was a record month for India’s four largest carmakers by factory dispatches, led by Maruti Suzuki’s 25% jump and strong exports across the board. Because Diwali falls in November this year and the figures measure dispatches rather than retail sales, the clearer test of demand comes with November registrations and December-quarter earnings.

Method note: FutureKnowledge compared October 2026 figures reported by Autocar Professional, ANI, Rushlane, Auto India Daily, Auto Punditz, TaxGuru and Investywise, and checked prior-year bases against official October 2025 releases from Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra. Where outlets used different category definitions, we used the figures that reconciled with company totals. The combined growth figure is our own calculation.
