Indian shares gave back part of last week’s rally on Monday, 19 October 2026, as investors reacted to September-quarter results from the large private banks and a fresh round of weakness in IT stocks. The BSE Sensex fell 876.37 points, or 1.17%, to 73,852.90, and the NSE Nifty 50 lost 257.20 points, or 1.11%, to 22,888.95. Inside banking, private lenders fell while state-run banks rose. With markets shut on Tuesday for Dussehra and the Jio Platforms IPO opening on Wednesday, the sell-off sets the tone for a short, busy week.

What happened

According to The Federal, carrying PTI’s market report, the Sensex fell as much as 1,020.73 points, to 73,708.54, during the session, after closing at 74,729.27 on Friday. Upstox reported that the Nifty’s intraday low was 22,845.

The selling was broad. Business Standard’s live coverage showed the Nifty Midcap 100 down 1.09% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 down 1.01%. By sector, the Nifty Private Bank index fell about 1.85%, FMCG 1.44% and IT 1.28%. The Nifty PSU Bank index rose about 2.4%, the only major sector index to gain. HDFC Sky counted 2,925 stocks falling and 1,163 rising.

The Federal reported that the total market capitalisation figure it tracks fell from ₹4,72,62,167 crore on Friday to ₹4,67,46,191 crore, a drop of about ₹5.16 lakh crore by our calculation. It added that HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank together accounted for more than half of the Sensex’s fall.

Why it happened

Private-bank results: growth strong, margins under pressure

Axis Bank was the sharpest faller among the large banks. The Federal put its fall at 3.85% at the close, while HDFC Sky reported a drop of about 4.2%; the difference reflects when the figures were taken. Reuters, via MarketScreener, reported that the stock fell as much as 5% in early trade, its biggest intraday fall since 24 September. IIFL Securities described the move as the biggest daily drop since December 2025; the two measure different things.

Axis reported standalone net profit of ₹7,003 crore for July-September, up 38% from a year earlier. Reuters noted this was below the LSEG analysts’ average estimate of ₹7,124 crore. Business Today reported that net interest income rose 12% and that the net interest margin fell 10 basis points from the previous quarter to 3.36%. Excluding foreign-currency (FCNR-B) deposits, it was 3.47%, roughly flat. Analysts cited by IIFL and Reuters pointed to higher operating costs, muted fee income and lower treasury gains as bond yields rose. Asset quality improved: gross bad loans fell to 1.16% from 1.46% a year earlier, according to IIFL.

Balance-sheet growth was fast. The bank’s quarterly business update filed on 5 October showed gross advances of ₹13,846 billion, up 22.7%, and deposits of ₹14,521 billion, up 20.7%. Term deposits rose 27.3%, far faster than current and savings accounts at 10.6%. That mix explains the margin story: costlier term and FCNR-B deposits are funding loan growth. Business Today reported a credit-to-deposit ratio of 94.6%, cited by JM Financial.

HDFC Bank fell more than 2%, according to The Federal, and ICICI Bank about 1.15% despite a better-than-expected profit, according to HDFC Sky.

PSU banks went the other way

State-run lenders rose after their own results. HDFC Sky reported gains of about 4.8% for Punjab National Bank and 5.3% for Union Bank of India, and Business Standard listed SBI among the Sensex’s top gainers. Vinod Nair of Geojit Investments, quoted in Business Standard and The Federal, said private banks faced margin concerns after earnings, while state-run banks held up on expectations of steadier margins and asset quality.

IT, oil and global cues

Infosys and LTIMindtree were among the larger losers, with LTIMindtree falling after its profit missed forecasts, according to HDFC Sky. The Federal noted Friday’s 2.14% fall in the Nasdaq Composite. Brent crude stayed near $108 a barrel. The Federal reported a 1.07% fall to $108.7, while Reuters, via Business Recorder, reported a drop of about 2% to $108 after the US waived some Russia-related sanctions.

How it affects India and businesses

For banks, the day was a reminder that the market is now judging lenders on margins and funding costs rather than on loan growth alone. Banks that raised large FCNR-B deposits in the RBI’s window grew deposits faster, but reported margins narrowed. Reuters also reported that the RBI raised interest rates in October for the first time in four years, which can lift deposit costs before loan yields catch up.

For companies planning to raise equity, Monday’s fall matters because of timing. The Jio Platforms IPO, India’s largest at up to ₹30,213 crore with a price band of ₹1,065-1,119, opens on 21 October and closes on 23 October. A weaker tone can affect retail demand, though large issues depend heavily on institutions.

The rupee ended almost unchanged at 94.9250 per dollar, according to the same Reuters report, but sustained high oil prices remain the bigger risk for the currency.

Who is more or less exposed

  • More exposed: lenders that relied heavily on FCNR-B and term deposits to fund rapid loan growth, and those with high credit-to-deposit ratios; IT services firms whose results disappointed after last week’s rally; sectors with heavy foreign ownership.
  • Less exposed: state-run banks with larger current and savings account bases, which the market currently sees as having steadier margins.

Scenarios to watch

These are conditional scenarios, not predictions.

If Then a likely pattern is
Brent eases well below $100 and stays there Less pressure on the rupee and inflation; banks and rate-sensitive sectors could regain support
Brent stays above $105 with Gulf tensions unresolved Continued pressure on the import bill and rupee; caution on further RBI tightening
Remaining bank results show stable margins excluding FCNR-B effects Investors may treat the margin dip as temporary
Margins narrow further as deposit costs rise The gap between private and state-run bank valuations could keep narrowing

What to watch next

  • Trading on Wednesday, 21 October, after the Dussehra holiday, and subscription data for the Jio Platforms IPO.
  • The minutes of the RBI’s October policy meeting, for signals on further rate rises.
  • Results from other private and state-run banks, especially on deposit costs and margins.
  • Foreign investor flows, after FIIs were net buyers on Friday, according to The Federal.

Bottom line

Monday’s 1.2% fall was less a judgement on the economy than a repricing of bank earnings after a strong week. Private lenders are growing quickly but paying more for deposits, and the market rewarded the state-run banks that appear better placed on funding. Oil prices and demand for India’s largest IPO are the next tests.

Method note

We compared market reports from Business Standard, The Federal (PTI), Upstox, HDFC Sky, Business Today, IIFL Securities and Reuters (via MarketScreener and Business Recorder) with Axis Bank’s 5 October regulatory business update. Where figures differed, such as Axis Bank’s closing fall and Brent’s move, we gave both. The market-capitalisation change is our calculation from reported figures. Holiday and IPO dates were checked against ClearTax and Groww.
