Is that Twisters? No, that’s just a hint of storm-chasing in the trailer for the second season of Peacock’s The Paper, which more than earned the ability to not be qualified as a spinoff of The Office though it still helps to mention that up at the top just as a refresher. Set in the bustling Midwestern metropolis of Toledo, Ohio, the first season of the show established Domhnall Gleeson’s Ned as a doggedly determined editor-in-chief, convinced he could teach a bunch of clickbait-typing faux-journalists into covering real stories and real news for the Toledo Truth Teller. He’s often undermined though sometimes surprised by the series’ runaway favorite Esmeralda, played by a vivacious Sabrina Impacciatore. There are crushes (Chelsea Frei’s Mare catches Ned’s eye) and characters (Eric Rahill’s Travis frequently steals the show), but above all else, there’s a paper to print.
The Paper’s season follows the Toledo Truth Teller as it goes down the slippery slope of any major media company, chasing a big story, no matter the cost. Whether that’s infiltrating a private club or chasing a literal tornado out, we know that these reporters are on the story, so long as they make it back to their computers later to write it up. All episodes of The Paper will premiere on Peacock on September 9.
