An Australian woman faces tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills and a potentially costly evacuation after being seriously injured in a scooter crash while attending a wedding in Bali.
Amy Donohue remains in hospital while friends and family arrange her treatment and return to Australia.
A GoFundMe campaign
set up for Donohue says her medical expenses have exceeded A$30,000 ($36,000) and are still rising.
“What should have been a beautiful trip has turned into something none of us could ever have imagined,” the fundraiser reads.
“We are now doing everything we possibly can to arrange the care and transport needed to bring Amy home safely to Australia.”
The campaign had raised nearly A$9000 ($10790) at the time of publication. Organisers say donations will help cover hospital treatment, evacuation expenses, continuing medical care and Donohue’s return home.
“For Amy, her family and everyone who loves her, the only priority right now is making sure she receives the care she needs and gets home safely,” the fundraiser continues.
Donohue runs The Healing Cottage, a wellness business on Queensland’s Gold Coast, and works as a remedial massage therapist and holistic practitioner.
Details of the crash, Donohue’s injuries and her current condition have not been made public.
It is also unclear whether she had travel insurance.
Even when travellers have insurance, policies commonly impose conditions on scooter and motorcycle use overseas. Depending on the insurer and policy, travellers may need an appropriate motorcycle licence, additional cover and a helmet for a claim to be accepted.

Ella Cutler suffered critical injuries, including a fractured skull, broken spine and punctured lungs, and spent weeks in an induced coma.
Her insurer reportedly declined to cover her hospital treatment and medical evacuation after authorities found she had a high blood-alcohol level at the time of the fall, according to the Guardian.
Her family subsequently raised more than A$500,000 ($600,000) through crowdfunding to help meet hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical and transport costs.
