Germany's heating sector sold 352,000 heating systems in the first half-year, up 19% on the year, the German Heating Industry Association (BDH) reported in Cologne on Tuesday.
The figure includes 194,500 heat pumps, up 40%, 134,000 gas heating systems, up 1%, 9,500 oil-fired heating systems, down 11%, and 14,000 biomass heating systems, down 1%.
While strong growth in heat pumps was seen as positive, overall market volume remains low. In the first half of 2023, manufacturers sold 667,500 heating systems, more than half of which were gas heating systems.
For the full year, the BDH expects sales of around 700,000 systems. Last year, heating system sales fell to 627,000 units, the lowest level in 15 years, according to the association. Of these, 299,000 were heat pumps.
The BDH called for stimulus to accelerate modernization of the building stock and achieve climate targets.
"Around 4 million heating systems are more than 30 years old, and more than 40% of the 21.5 million heating systems in Germany do not meet current technical standards," it said.
