The Allahabad High Court has said that if women voluntarily convert to Islam and marry persons of their choice, nobody, including their father, could interfere with the decision, reported The Indian Express on Saturday.
The court was hearing a petition by two sisters, aged 20 and 35, on July 30.
Through their counsel, they told Justice Sandeep Jain that they had voluntarily converted from Hinduism to Islam and decided to marry as per their own wishes, which was their fundamental right, reported The Hindu.
Jain ordered the Uttar Pradesh police and the father of the two women to produce them before the court on August 6.
The direction came after the counsel for the sisters alleged before the court that their father had filed a police complaint in Agra in May 2025 to stop them from exercising their choices.
A first information report was registered based on this under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections pertaining to punishment for kidnapping, abducting or inducing women to compel her into marriage, reported The Indian Express.
They also alleged that they were being illegally confined with the help of police.
Since the sisters had converted voluntarily and there was no evidence of coercion or deception, the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021, does not apply in this case, their lawyer told the…
