Wrexham came up short in the pursuit of the Championship play-offs last year. They are determined to go at least one better this term, and late recruits are on the radar to help them do so.
Now, the Daily Mail has reported that one player on the radar at the Racecourse Ground is Anis Mehmeti. The attacking midfielder only joinedIpswich Town in the winter, but after their promotion, a string of new players have signed and Mehmeti was left out of the squad for their opening day win over Sunderland.
Mehmeti, 25, penned a contract until the summer of 2029 with the Tractor Boys. It remains to be seen if he would be willing to drop down to the Championship after making it to the Premier League for the first time in his career.
Mehmeti had cemented himself as a key player at Bristol City before deciding to switch to Ipswich Town in the winter. He started quickly with two goals and two assists in his first five starts for his new club.
Output slowed over the remainder of the campaign but the Albania international remained an asset for Kieran McKenna as the Tractor Boys returned to the Premier League. However, new additions mean a late window departure is not out of the question.
Julio Enciso has joined as a new star no.10 at Portman Road, while options on the left-wing include Daizen Maeda, Jack Clarke and Jaden Philogene. With such competition in key areas, Mehmeti may be better off dropping back to the Championship for more game time.
He would be an exciting signing for Wrexham, offering trickery and flair alongside the dual threat of goals and assists.
Wrexham have spent big and recruited widely in past transfer windows. After falling short of promotion for the first time in three years, the Red Dragons' squad doesn't need massive overhaul this summer.
They've focused on strengthening weak areas, with Anthony Patterson joining in goal, Danny Imray arriving as a new right-back, while Ben Whiteman offers leadership and Championship steel in the middle of the park.
Phil Parkinson has no shortage of players who can operate in the attacking midfield or inside forward roles behind the number nine. However, there is no doubting that Mehmeti would be a very exciting signing in this area.
Despite his Premier League desires, a drop back to the Championship with Wrexham could give him the chance to quickly return. It remains to be seen if the late window interest transpires into a deal with Jacques Ekomie also on the radar.
