Punk Rock Flea: The Windsor Punk Rock Flea Market takes over the Capitol Theatre on Saturday, Aug. 22, bringing more than 24 vendors under one roof for an evening of vintage finds, local art, handmade goods, oddities and apparel. The free, all ages event runs 4-9 p.m. and features live bands. The Downtown Mission and Windsor Youth Centre will also be on hand accepting donations.
Island rhythms: African and Caribbean culture take centre stage at Lanspeary Park (1250 Langlois Ave.) as WIDA Fest returns from Aug. 20-23. Enjoy four days of live music, dance, art, cultural performances, vendors and more. WIDA Fest has partnered with the Toronto Caribbean Carnival to bring the sights and sounds of J’ouvert and traditional mas bands to Windsor. Admission is free.
Roaring riverfront: Windsor’s Prohibition era will come back to life during the Riverfront Speakeasy at the Legacy Beacon (780 Riverside Dr. W.) on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 5-10 p.m. The free, family-friendly event will transform the waterfront into a 1920s-inspired gathering complete with live jazz, interactive entertainment, fortune tellers, historical reenactments and a hidden speakeasy waiting to be discovered. Visitors can also tour Historic Streetcar No. 351, enjoy local beverages on the waterfront patio and take in performances from several local musicians and entertainers throughout the evening. Period attire is encouraged, but not required.
Latin Fest: Amherstburg Open Air Weekends celebrates its penultimate weekend with a salsa flavour Aug. 22-24. Latin Fest will showcase the richness and diversity of Latin culture through cultural dance, musical performances and demonstrations downtown. Music and dancing include: the Retro Candle Band, guided historical tours, the Maxei Cultural Group, Art of the Dance and the Sabor Latino Band. For more information see: visitamherstburg.ca.
Gatsby glamour: The Roaring ’20s return to the big screen during a special screening of The Great Gatsby at the Capitol Theatre on Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. Presented by the Windsor International Film Festival, the $5 screening invites moviegoers to step into the world of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic tale while celebrating the fashion, music and elegance of the Jazz Age. Guests are encouraged to dress in their finest 1920s attire for the evening, part of Windsor’s Prohibition Week.
Butterfly bonanza: Monarchs and swallowtails take flight for the sixth annual Butterfly Festival on Sunday, Aug. 23 at the Via Italia Heritage Garden on Erie Street East between Langlois and Marion Streets. The event runs from 12-4 p.m. and features live butterfly releases at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m., along with displays and information about the monarch life cycle. Visitors can also pick up native plant seeds, browse artisan vendors and enjoy face painting and children’s entertainment.
Girls in trades: Young women can explore careers in the skilled trades and technologies during an all-girls Skills Ontario summer camp at St. Clair College’s Windsor campus Aug. 24-28. The week-long day camp will feature hands-on interactive activities designed to build skills and introduce participants to opportunities in the trades and technology sector.
