Two people have died and several more were injured, including three police officers, when a gunman opened fire in the US city of Minneapolis, police said.

The suspect was one of the dead, said Garrett Parten, a spokesperson for the police.

Parten said it was not immediately clear how
he had died. He added that one person died at the scene and another later died in hospital.

Also taken to the hospital were three police officers, including two who were shot. Both were expected to survive, with a hospital spokesperson telling AFP that they were in “stable condition.”

One was shot in the leg, while another was in surgery. It was not clear what injury the third officer sustained.

There was no mention of motive during the press conference.

Governor Tim Walz asked the public to “pray for Minnesota”.

In a statement the city said: “The Minneapolis Police Department is on the scene of a shooting … involving multiple victims, including two police officers.”

Walz said on X that his “public safety team is responding to a shooting that took place downtown Minneapolis this afternoon”.

He added: “State officials are on the ground to support local law enforcement and we will share more information as it becomes available”.

CBS News reported that police vehicles, SWAT vehicles and emergency services attended the scene.

The shooting was reported near Loring Towers, an apartment building on 15 East Grant St — about half a block from the Minneapolis Convention Centre in the Loring Park neighbourhood.

The Guardian reported that social media videos showed police aiming rifles upward at an apartment tower near the centre.

FBI director Kash Patel said on X that the bureau had extended its resources to aid local law enforcement.
