‘STRONG FOCUS’: FIRST HINT OF ROOS’ HUNT FOR NEW SENIOR COACH
Initial reports have begun on where North Melbourne could first look in their hunt to replace Alastair Clarkson at the helm, just days after his shock sacking.
Four seasons on from his appointment at Arden Street, the four-time Hawthorn premiership coach was relieved of his senior duties — despite leading the Kangaroos to their best year on-field since 2019.
But alas, his former club is expected to begin its search for his replacement imminently with a keen eye on untried coaches, reports Nine’s Damian Barrett.
“I expect North, now that they’re after a new coach, to at least initially head down with great focus on the untried candidates; as opposed to the John Longmire, Adam Simpson and even Nathan Buckley possibilities,” Barrett said on Sunday morning.
“They may all be in the mix when it’s said and done … but there is a strong focus, the way I read it, on the untried.
“He’s (Jaymie Graham) certainly a name (who’s) been raised during the week privately, as was Corey Enright’s as well. There’s others in that space, but I expect both of those guys to be given a chance to apply for it.”
Longmire and Simpson, who are both premiership coaches at Sydney and West Coast respectively, played over 500 games collectively for the Kangaroos between 1988 and 2009.
When the prospect of coaching their old club was put to them on Fox Footy’s AFL 360 on Wednesday night, neither was willing to commit to a definitive answer on their intentions.
