Seems likely that Karen Bass has lost the Writers Guild of America endorsement for her reelection campaign. Mayor Bass joined Governor Gavin Newsom and the Democratic nominee to succeed him, Xavier Becerra, in urging the state attorney general and the WGA to settle with Paramount and let the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery go through. “This is not about taking sides, this is about fighting for Los Angeles, standing up for our union workers, keeping Paramount here, and protecting the future of this industry,” she said at a press conference. Apparently, she believes David Ellison’s threat to leave town in a huff if this merger takes any longer. Bass’s remarks came a day after the L.A. Department of Economic Opportunity and CVL Economics reported that the merger would cost the town thousands of jobs, $1.26 billion in lost wages, and $2.78 billion in lost economic value.

The WGA issued a rebuttal statement to Bass, saying in part, “We are disappointed that Mayor Bass has chosen to join Paramount’s pressure campaign on public enforcers, to push through a merger that is being rightfully challenged as illegal and will lead to job losses in the entertainment industry.”

It’s been a rough week for Bass overall. On Thursday night, the mayor drew criticism from foodies for her comments disparaging street vendors during a mayoral debate. She also got blasted on Fox News this week for a recent video of the mayor’s office being unable to fix a pothole.
