Paul Mescal took a break from filming Sam Mendes’ epic Beatles’ four-part film event to support his sister, singer-songwriter Nell Mescal, at All Points East in London over the weekend. He was there with his Beatles co-star Harris Dickinson. I have an instinct that releasing four biopics at once is going to be a mistake—people only have so much money—but I also have an instinct that Gens Z and Alpha might go f-cking NUTS for these movies.
Between discovering the Beatles—nothing young people love more than assuming they’ve just discovered/invented some well-known thing, I say as a former young person—and the catnip cast of Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Barry Keoghan, and Joseph Quinn, there’s an internet boyfriend for everyone. I wonder if these films might be a case in which internet furor won’t match real world results, because I feel like there will be a TON of hype, but also asking people to pay for four movies in the same month is a lot. That’s a big ask even when the economy is good.
(Also, Lainey asked how Oscar consideration should work, given that there will be four films, but they’re filming concurrently. Based on current rules, they’ll be considered individually, but I have an increasingly strong opinion that the rule needs to change. If films are shot concurrently, it should be considered one production, and the producers should choose which one to enter for Oscar consideration. Nominating concurrent productions multiple times feels like a cheat code that no one has addressed since Lord of the Rings.)
I checked out some of Nell Mescal’s music. She’s got three EPs out, the most recent released in October 2025, and she just released the single “Settles”. She sounds like she grew up on Taylor Swift, which is a compliment to Nell and Taylor. And in the world of nepo singers, I like Nell’s music more than anything I’ve ever heard from Gracie Abrams.
