We finally have the details of Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez’s surprisingly low-key, secret wedding.
The billionaire footballer, 41, wed his long-time partner, 32, in an ‘intimate and private’ ceremony last week, a year after he popped the question with a £3million ring.
It came after rumours of a spectacle at Portugal’s Funchal Cathedral, followed by a bash at the five-star Savoy Palace, spread wildly in the British press, leading everyone to believe they were getting hitched there last weekend.
But when a bride and groom who were most certainly not Ronaldo and Rodriguez arrived to a crowd of thousands, the penny dropped that those were all they were – rumours.
Rodriguez met Ronaldo in 2016 when she worked as a sales manager at the Gucci store in Madrid.
Fast forward a decade, and they said ‘I do’ in an unexpectedly discreet ceremony, considering their combined Instagram following of over 750 million and his net worth exceeding $1.2billion.
Specifics of their ceremony emerged this weekend, with Vogue revealing that they married in their living room in Cascais, Portugal, where they own a £30m mansion.
‘It was exactly as I’d imagined it,’ said Rodriguez, admitting that she ‘couldn’t hold back the tears’.
Jornal de Noticias published a copy of their marriage certificate on Thursday, which confirmed just four witnesses were present, as well as their children.
Ronaldo’s mother, Dolores Aveiro, and his siblings Hugo, Elma, and Katia were not present and reportedly found out about the wedding just 30 seconds before.
Still, his mother had given her blessing, having already had to refute claims of a feud with her daughter-in-law once before.
When Ronaldo took to social media with a snap of their wedding bands, she commented a heart underneath.
And it looks like she’ll be on the guest list later when plans for a big blow-out are arranged.
‘In the future we will have a big wedding so we can celebrate with family and friends,’ Rodriguez shared with Vogue following a ‘crazy year’ of commitments in both their work and personal lives.
‘When I was a little girl, I dreamt of the biggest castle, the biggest carriage, the longest dress, a crown full of diamonds. And now I’m saying, “No. I want something intimate, with my partner and our children, at home.”
