Nashville International Airport in Tennessee is set to be renamed in honour of Dolly Parton, who died after a brief battle with cancer earlier this week.
The country music singer was born in Sevier County, a rural part of Tennessee and remained living in the state until her death on Tuesday.
Announcing the plans, Governor Bill Lee said Parton’s life is “forever woven into the fabric of our state”.
“At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness,” he said.
The announcement is one of many tributes paid to the country music icon this week. In London, tourists watched as the Band of the Coldstream Guards played one of the superstar’s most popular songs at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday morning.
Footage was shared on the royal family’s official social media, alongside the message: “Remembering the late, great Dolly, who brought joy, comfort and inspiration to so many – including the millions of children given free books through her Imagination Library. We will always (heart) you.”
Some of the biggest names in music, including Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Mick Jagger, Taylor Swift and Parton’s godchild Miley Cyrus, have all detailed her impact and her legacy, as both a musician and a humanitarian.
Landmarks around the US have been lit up pink in her honour, including the Empire State Building in New York, the Willis Tower in Chicago and the Pacific Park Ferris Wheel in Los Angeles.
