The Muppets are having a hard week. They’ve posted touching tributes to two close friends, Dolly Parton and Tim Curry, but the latter played an important role in shaping how fans talk about the Muppets. Fans love to reference The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island as the blueprint for the “Everyone except one actor is a Muppet” recreation of beloved classic novels — and Curry, star of Treasure Island, played an integral role in shaping how modern fans view the celebrity-to-Muppet relationship. His role was so impactful that the Muppets have embraced him as one of their own. “Few humans have earned the title of honorary Muppet more than the legendary Tim Curry,” the Muppets’ official Instagram wrote on August 26. “As a performer he was unparalleled — witty, charming, unnerving, and deeply funny.”

Curry was so dedicated to being part of Muppethood that he had a decades-long ongoing joke about having an affair with Miss Piggy on the set of Muppet Treasure Island. “I hope it’s not intruding too much on your personal life — if it is, forgive me in advance: Was there ever one great love of your life that got away that you regret?” Charlie Adler asked in a 2019 interview. “Sure, there always is. Miss Piggy,” Curry replied sternly. “I’ll tell you, once you’ve had pork, you’ll never go back.” Hold her close, Kermit.
