The tables have turned for Broc Feeney, the back-to-back winner of the Supercars Sprint Cup.
Feeney claimed an against-the-odds victory at the end of the sport’s regular season, overturning a 125-point deficit to Matt Payne in two races to claim the first major piece of silverware of the campaign.
The Queenslander had trailed Payne for eight races amid a form slump for his Triple Eight team as it struggled to unlock pace in its first season as the Ford homologation squad.

Feeney sealed the deal with victory on Sunday in Ipswich, but the result required Payne to retire from the race.
The Grove star was running fifth when his engine developed an electrical problem that sent him back to the pits. The issue proved terminal, and he was forced to watch Feeney cruise to victory in the race and the Sprint Cup from his garage.
A 19th-place finish would have been enough for him to seal the deal.
For Feeney, it was remarkably reminiscent of his experience at the end of last year’s finals campaign, when he lost the championship to Chaz Mostert when his car developed engine problems in the title-deciding race.
Speaking to MotorRacing 360 on Fox Sports, Feeney was hopeful that it was a sign his fortunes were beginning to turn, though he admitted he felt for Payne, having endured a similar emotional rollercoaster less than 12 months earlier.
“Broc Bradbury!” he laughed. “It’s been one of those years. It’s been so up and down, and the position that I was in 12 months ago to where I am today is very different, but to walk away with back-to-back Sprint Cups is awesome.
“It was tough to watch with Matty, but I’ve certainly been on the receiving end of that. For some reason maybe my luck’s changing.”
Feeney added, however, that his own engine had suffered an unrecoverable problem just days later, during a post-race test.
With the knockout rounds approaching, the Sprint Cup winner said protecting reliability would be crucial, though he stopped short of suggesting his team might make precautionary engine changes ahead of key races.
“It’s an interesting one,” he said. “Our guys back at Triple Eight and the Ford engine program will look into those a lot.
“My engine got swapped out [Tuesday] night. On the last lap of the test day I came out of the last corner and it was losing power and sounded like it was going to go bang, so I switched it off quickly.
