The concept of peacekeeping (made a national day of remembrance in Canada Aug. 9, 2008) is deeply ingrained in our Canadian culture, reflecting the strength of our country’s diverse identity and national heritage.

To grasp the importance of remembering our peacekeepers, who gave up a piece of individuality to become a part of something larger than themselves, serving with the United Nations and NATO has impacted a quality of life globally since 1956.
Generations of Peacekeepers (of all nationalities) “stood at the ready” as a stabilizing force skilled in diplomacy (fostering non-violent values to dismantle social inequalities) to facilitate the delivery of compassionate humanitarian aid under the harshest of conditions to protect civilians whose lives (dignity/freedom) are “put in harm’s way” across global environments of intense conflict and crisis.
Thank you to the Windsor Star for its generous media support of the annual Peacekeepers Memorial Service conducted in Windsor’s Reaume Park Sunday Aug. 9.
Sarah Grishpul’s article published in the Windsor Star Aug. 12 not only brought our diverse community that much closer to every measure of the “depth of courage” and “strength of patriotism,” it succinctly speaks to how the legacy of peacekeeping is a fundamental priority that needs to be valued as an investment in creating a space for peace in this generation and those to follow.
