There’s no greater bond than women who accidentally killed their evil boss together. 9 to 5 stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin paid separate tributes to their late co-star and close friend Dolly Parton on August 25. Tomlin played the brilliant Violet Newstead, a widow who was passed over for a promotion despite being the most qualified person for the job. She remembered her pal from her most intimate role to her biggest impact on the world, writing on X, “Friend. Songwriter. The Great Harmonizer of Humanity. Dolly. Dolly. Dolly. Forever Dolly.”

Fonda, who played Judy Bernly, a woman who joined the office after a heartbreaking divorce, spoke to every facet of Parton’s legacy. The actress remembered her friend’s humor and how in addition to being a talented musician, she was a jokester at heart. Fonda wrote, “She was many things…lyricist, songstress, player of many instruments, writer, prankster, visionary, loyal friend, who’d never go to bed before she and her friends had laughed so hard they’d have to cross their legs.” Her outspoken work with the LGBT community was an important part of her advocacy, and Fonda spoke directly to her gay and transgender fans who are mourning alongside her. “To her gay and trans fans, I want you to know that she loved you. You know that without me telling you,” she wrote. “She loved all her fans and they are legion. And you know she doesn’t want y’all to mourn now. Dress up and celebrate her spirit.”
