This is something you either crank up in July or forget about entirely until next summer. The problem is that neglect is exactly what kills it. A lot of the failures that send people to the shop are easily preventable if you start adding in a few habits.

Running your car's A/C for like 10 minutes a week, even in winter, is probably the cheapest and easiest way to keep it from dying on you early. It sounds weird to blast cold air when it's freezing out or like you’re wasting gas. But the whole climate control loop is a closed system that kind of needs regular use to stay healthy.

The refrigerant absorbs and releases heat as it cycles through the system, and it carries the compressor oil around the system. That oil lubricates the fast-moving pistons and bearings inside the compressor and keeps all the rubber hoses, O-rings, and shaft seals soft and conditioned.

When the system sits unused for a long time, gravity pulls that oil away from the seals. Leave it dry over a winter, and those rubber parts start shrinking, hardening, and cracking. Once micro-cracks form, you get tiny leak paths and pressurized refrigerant escapes.

It doesn't take much time, and if you are a fan of lowering your windows instead of using the A/C, just make a habit of turning it on once a week. It’s worth the lowered EV range.

The condenser sits at the front of your engine bay, in front of the radiator, and it's basically a cross-flow heat exchanger. Its job is to dump heat by taking superheated, high-pressure refrigerant gas from the compressor and releasing it into the outside air so the gas condenses back into a high-pressure liquid.

To do that properly, it needs a ton of airflow. But since it's mounted forward-facing, the fins get hammered by bugs, dust, leaves, road grit, and a whole lot more. Those fins are packed super tight, so you want to clear that stuff off regularly.

If you don't, it will clog, and then it won't work as well. You'll end up having to turn the A/C up because it won't feel as cold.

Just check the front grille, use a soft brush or a low-pressure hose, and wash out the junk. Make sure to keep the water pressure low so you don't bend the fins.

You should replace your cabin air filter every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. If you don't, your HVAC system basically starts choking. The whole heating and cooling loop depends on getting a steady flow of air, and once that filter cakes up, the airflow drops hard.

A filter works the way it's named. It takes away the little stuff, and the more it adds up, the less airflow goes through. A clogged filter actually gets in the way of how much air can move across the evaporator core.

Something most people don't think about is that a clean filter also keeps mold spores, dust, and allergens out of the climate-controlled housing. Eventually, you get that musty, stale smell coming through the vents every time you turn the AC on. It smells like old water, and it tells you that you desperately need to change your cabin filter.

Just keep in mind that this isn't always the case for that smell; sometimes you just need to let the A/C go for like 10 minutes, and the smell will leave if your filter isn't the problem.

So windshield defrost isn't just a way to blow hot air on the glass to make it easier to look through. It's actually a whole climate control sequence that uses the AC system to pull moisture out of the air. When warm, humid air inside the car hits cold glass, it condenses, and suddenly you can't see. So the car runs the air across the freezing evaporator core first, then heats it.

That cold surface forces the water vapor to condense out of the air before it ever reaches the windshield. Then the now-dry air gets routed past the heater core to warm it up. So you're blasting dry air at the glass, which acts like a sponge and clears the fog way faster than normal heat.
