Lena Dunham’s impact. Last night at D23’s big announcements event, it was clear Marvel’s been on a Girls rewatch. Or at the very least, read Dunham’s famesick. Christopher Abbott and Adam Driver, both Girls exes, are joining the MCU as Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X, and Nathaniel Milbury, a.k.a. Mr. Sinister. “Kevin and I had been talking for years about my joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I think we finally found the perfect film,” Driver shared via video to the crowd. “So I’m very excited to be playing the role of Magneto! *pause* even better, Nathaniel Milbury.” They’ll be joining Obsession breakout star Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Kit Connor as Scott Summers/Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Maya Boyd as Storm.
Last month, Kevin Feige told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that it’s basically tradition for Driver to turn down a Marvel offer every year. “It’s no secret we’d like to [work with Adam],” Feige stated. “But it’s a tradition to Zoom with him and then he passes. That’s a long-lived tradition. He couldn’t be more cordial. He is usually upfront about how he is feeling.” Guess the tradition is broken now.
