FORT MORGAN, Ala. (WKRG) – A new stretch of the Fort Morgan trail is officially open, adding more than four miles of trail for people to come out and explore.

Alabama State Parks celebrated the opening on Friday, Aug. 28, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The new extension adds 4.4 miles of paved trail westward along Fort Morgan Road, stretching from Plantation Boulevard to near Ewing Place and Fort Morgan Pizza.
Along the way are 12 bridges over coastal wetlands, and at the end of the trail there's a new restroom facility.
The $5.6 million expansion was funded by the federal RESTORE Act after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

State leaders said this project is part of a bigger effort to give people more opportunities to get outside and enjoy the coast.
"We've had a real initiative to make sure that we have plenty of access for the public for outdoor recreation, whether that's boating access or like this, outdoor recreation with trails and things in nature," Chris Blankenship, the Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, said.
"There's no place more beautiful, I think, in the state of Alabama, than the Fort Morgan Peninsula. And so, to have this trail that goes through the wetlands and through the area down here that people can enjoy, it's just fantastic," he continued.
This extension now brings the Fort Morgan Trail to about 10 and a half miles and connects to the Backcountry Trail system in Gulf State Park.

Officials said there is plenty more expansion for this trail to come in the future.
