The death toll from devastating floods in the Himalayas has risen by two to seven in China, state news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday, while the number of people missing fell to 554 from 558.

More than 2,500 people remain missing in the disaster zone across Nepal and China. Nepal has reported 579 deaths, bringing the combined death toll on both sides of the border to 586.

Many foreign nationals are among those missing in both Nepal and south-western Tibet, a region of China.

Experts have said a glacier collapse in Nepal may have triggered the disaster on Wednesday, sending huge volumes of water down a river valley and destroying the Gyirong border crossing between Nepal and China. The crossing is on a major route for trade and tourism between the two countries.

Chinese rescue teams remain concerned about a lake that formed above Gyirong after the floods. A breach of the dam of mud and debris could send another surge of water down the valley.

But Chen Hanxiao, head of a team monitoring the site, said the danger had eased significantly because water was already flowing naturally out of the lake, according to Chinese state television.
