San Antonio Animal Care Services is asking residents to temporarily foster dogs and cats after overnight storms knocked out power at its shelter and left all of the facility's kennels without air conditioning.
As of Saturday morning, the entire campus at 4710 Texas 151 is without electricity, though their clinic still has power and air conditioning, spokesperson Lisa Norwood said.
ACS is bringing in generators and using generator-powered fans, but officials said the kennels are beginning to heat up as noon approaches.
People who can temporarily care for a dog or cat – potentially for a few days or several weeks – are asked to come to the shelter, where staff can provide guidance and next steps.
"Make sure its something you and your family can do and that you're willing to take on a temporary pet for just a little bit," Norwood said. "It might be a couple of days, or a couple of weeks, if people figure out that's something they can do. We really do need that help."
Norwood said ACS is having difficulty providing a phone number while the shelter remains without power.
The animals have food and water, but ACS is also seeking donations of pop-up metal crates. Norwood said the animals at the shelter are taken care of as far as food goes, but they are still asking for dog food, cat food and other pet supplies as they plan to help the community as well.
"We really do need that help," Norwood said. "It is our community that we are focused on. We're going to need to see what our community's needs are. That will be our next step after we get our pets into a better situation."
