Amazon wants to make waiting for a package feel almost old-fashioned. Its Prime Air drone delivery service is gearing up for a major expansion, with plans to reach nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026. For some shoppers, that could mean getting an eligible Amazon order dropped at home in as fast as 30 minutes.
That is a huge jump from where things stand today. Amazon currently operates Prime Air from 11 U.S. locations across 10 metro areas, and the company says its drones have already delivered hundreds of thousands of packages this year.
There is one detail worth keeping in mind when you hear that 500-city figure. Amazon is talking about communities served, rather than 500 individual drone hubs. Each Prime Air site can cover about 175 square miles, allowing one launch location to reach several nearby cities and towns.

Prime Air currently serves the Phoenix, Tampa, Kansas City, Baton Rouge, Detroit, Omaha, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Waco metro areas. Those markets span seven states. Amazon says Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta and Boise are next on its launch list. More communities are expected later this year.
If you live in one of those metro areas, that still does not guarantee a drone will appear as a delivery choice. Amazon says coverage can vary by ZIP code and address. When your home qualifies, the drone option appears while you shop or at checkout. That is the easiest way to know whether Prime Air has reached you. You do not need a separate app or a special Amazon account.
Amazon advertises Prime Air delivery in as fast as 30 minutes. However, the company says most drone orders currently arrive around 60 minutes after checkout. That could still save you a trip when you need something quickly. If you need a charger before a trip or medicine you would rather not drive out for, an hour can feel very different from waiting until tomorrow.
Amazon says Prime Air can carry packages up to 5 pounds that fit roughly inside a large shoebox. The company says that makes more than 60% of the items customers buy most often eligible for drone delivery. The selection can include iPhones, Galaxy phones, AirPods, AirTags, Ring doorbells, groceries and household products. Of course, the exact selection depends on your location and what Amazon can safely load onto the drone.
