A 4-year-old died after shooting herself with a handgun she found inside a closet in northwest Houston Thursday night, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Harris County's Precinct 4 Constable's Office found the young girl after responding to the shooting on the 8700 block of Champions Plaza Drive around 11 p.m., authorities said. She was alone inside a closet when she found the gun and shot herself, sheriff's office Sgt. Jason Brown said.
The girl was transported to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Authorities believe the shooting was accidental, Brown said.
The gun was unsecured inside the closet, where the mother was storing it at the time, according to law enforcement. She was facing possible charges but was not yet in custody, Brown said. The Harris County District Attorney's Office would review those charges after the sheriff's office's investigation.

A 10-year-old sibling was also home at the time, and law enforcement personnel were interviewing both family members to determine how the child could access the closet and the gun.
