Natarajan Chandrasekaran has announced that he will not seek another term as Chairman of Tata Sons when his current tenure ends on February 20, 2027. His decision marks the end of nearly a decade at the helm of the Tata Group, having taken charge of the conglomerate in 2017.

According to reports, the decision follows differences within the Tata Sons board over his reappointment. Tata Trusts, which owns a majority stake in Tata Sons, had supported extending his tenure. However, the proposal did not receive unanimous approval from the board, resulting in the matter remaining unresolved for several months.

Reports suggest that Noel Tata opposed the extension and sought certain assurances, including a commitment that Tata Sons would not be listed in the future. Other reported areas of disagreement included board representation and issues related to the exit of minority shareholder Shapoorji Pallonji.

In a letter announcing his decision, Chandrasekaran said that leadership clarity is important for employees, investors, partners and other stakeholders, especially as the Tata Group is executing several long-term strategic projects. He added that he has requested the board to begin the succession process to ensure a smooth transition before his term concludes.

Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987 and became the CEO of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in 2009. He was appointed Chairman of Tata Sons in February 2017, becoming the first person outside the Tata family to lead the group.

During his tenure, the Tata Group expanded its presence in sectors such as electric vehicles, semiconductors and aviation. The group also oversaw the revival of Air India following its acquisition and continued investments across multiple businesses.

His announcement comes at a time when several Tata Group companies are facing different challenges. Air India has been under regulatory scrutiny following a recent crash, TCS has been dealing with pricing pressures, while Jaguar Land Rover has been recovering from the impact of a cyberattack that disrupted production.

With Chandrasekaran confirming his departure, the focus now shifts to the Tata Sons board and its choice of the group’s next chairman ahead of February 2027.
