After much anticipation, BMW has added a new long wheelbase version to the X1 range in India. The BMW X1 LWB is priced at Rs 49.90 lakh ex-showroom and is now the most affordable X1 variant in the country. The bigger SUV is made in India at BMW Group Plant Chennai and is sold with a petrol engine.

The X1 LWB measures 4,616mm long, 2,104mm wide and 1,641mm tall. Its wheelbase measures 2,800mm, which is 108mm longer than the standard X1.

The extra size gives rear passengers more room.

The SUV gets 18-inch M light alloy wheels, satin aluminium trim, roof rails and adaptive LED headlights. Four colours are offered: Mineral White, Carbon Black, Night Dusk Blue and Skyscraper Grey.

The dashboard features BMW’s widescreen curved display and BMW Operating System 9. The cabin also gets powered front seats, ambient lighting, wireless charging and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. Key highlights –

Power comes from a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine. It produces 156hp and 230Nm. The engine works with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and sends power to the front wheels.

BMW claims a fuel efficiency figure of 15.5kmpl. The suspension has also been tuned for a softer ride on rough roads.

The X1 LWB gets eight airbags, ABS, DSC, ISOFIX mounts, tyre pressure monitoring and several driver assistance features. These include:

The BMW X1 LWB competes with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Mini Countryman.

For buyers wanting a luxury SUV with extra rear space, the X1 LWB looks like a practical addition to BMW’s range.
