Today, in Maharashtra, another question has become equally important: Have you verified the bride or groom?<\/p>\n
The shift is remarkable. Families that once depended on priests, relatives, neighbours and community gossip to validate a prospective spouse are increasingly hiring private detective agencies to conduct discreet background investigations.<\/p>\n
The trigger has been the chilling Lohagad Fort tragedy near Pune in June, where police allege that 20-year-old Siya Goyal, along with her alleged boyfriend, conspired to murder her fianc\u00e9, Pune realtor Ketan Agarwal, by pushing him into a gorge. What initially appeared to be an accident has become one of India\u2019s most disturbing pre-marital crime stories. The case is still before the courts, and the allegations remain to be proved there.<\/p>\n
The impact has gone far beyond Maharashtra\u2019s criminal justice system. Private investigators across Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and Nagpur report a sharp jump in enquiries from anxious parents wanting detailed background reports on prospective sons-in-law and daughters-in-law before engagement ceremonies take place. According to detective agencies, requests range from financial background checks and employment verification to social media behaviour, criminal records, addictions, hidden relationships and even personality assessments.<\/p>\n
The rise of pre-marital due diligence represents a profound sociological shift. For generations, arranged marriages relied on three pillars: matching horoscopes, family reputation, recommendations from relatives and friends. Those safeguards are no longer considered sufficient.<\/p>\n
Parents increasingly recognise that today\u2019s young adults lead lives largely invisible to extended families. Relationships begin on dating apps, careers take people across cities, and social media allows individuals to present carefully curated identities. A respectable family name no longer guarantees transparency.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, the investigations are no longer directed only at prospective grooms. Parents are increasingly scrutinising brides as well. That marks a significant departure from traditional Indian practice, where families primarily investigated the boy\u2019s earning capacity and family background while assuming the girl\u2019s character had already been vouched for by her family.<\/p>\n
Maharashtra appears to be at the forefront of this trend, but it is by no means alone. Detective agencies in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida and Chandigarh have offered matrimonial verification services for over two decades, largely catering to affluent business families and Non-Resident Indians.<\/p>\n
