Catch you again on Monday!

Greens defence spokesperson David Shoebridge has slammed the parliament's decision to expand ASIO's interrogation powers.

The laws were introduced in 2003, after the 9/11 attacks in the US to improve ASIO's ability to identify and counter threats of terrorism.

Yesterday, the Senate voted to expand ASIO's interrogation powers to include questioning for more offences such as the promotion of communal violence, sabotage and attacks on Australia's defence systems.

In July last year, Labor said it planned to remove the sunset provisions that required parliament to reconsider the powers on a regular basis. These amendments will now make the law permanent.

Speaking to the media at Parliament House, Shoebridge said the expanded powers were rife for exploitation.

"The idea that we have created these kinds of laws with such a low threshold for people to be taken off the street, secretly interrogated and then have a blanket of silence put over them and threaten them with jail if they tell the truth are laws that make our state fascist ready," Shoebridge says.

Federal government advisers have extended their outlook on when 1.2 million homes will be built, as developers, builders and investors wait to see whether the housing market will settle or fall further in the wake of interest rate rises and an overhaul of the tax system.

The National Housing Supply and Affordability Council originally forecast the National Housing Accord would deliver 1.2 million new homes by June 2029, then in April revised this to September 2030, but now expects the target will not be reached until the end of 2030.

The May federal budget contained a major rewrite of tax perks for housing investors, ending negative gearing benefits on existing properties bought after budget night and tightening the discount from capital gains tax when investment properties are sold.

Read the full exclusive story from senior political correspondent Jake Evans in the link below.

Source: Read the original article on www.abc.net.au

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) have charged a 27-year-old Russian Australian man with foreign interference.
