{"id":5028,"date":"2026-08-03T15:52:42","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T15:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/futureknowledge.in\/?p=5028"},"modified":"2026-08-03T15:52:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T15:52:42","slug":"youth-protests-supreme-court-clarifies-states-can-withdraw-firs-against-demonstrators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/futureknowledge.in\/?p=5028","title":{"rendered":"Youth protests: Supreme Court clarifies states can withdraw FIRs against demonstrators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sc0.blr1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/article\/212453-yxgwzrnsfx-1773472539.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court on Monday clarified that <a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livelaw.in\/top-stories\/student-protests-supreme-court-clarifies-states-can-closewithdraw-firs-against-protesters-544049\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>states can withdraw<\/u><\/a> first information reports filed against youth protesters wherever permissible, in accordance with the law, <em>Live Law<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The clarification came in response to concerns raised by petitioners that the court\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/latest\/1094594\/supreme-court-orders-release-of-students-held-during-youth-protests\">July 28 order<\/a>, which allowed states to continue investigations into the FIRs, could hinder the withdrawal of cases. They argued that closing the FIRs was part of the Union government\u2019s promise to leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign to end the protests.<\/p>\n<p>It also came after the Union government submitted that it was \u201c<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/cjp-protest-sc-clarifies-states-can-withdraw-firs-against-students-in-accordance-with-law\/article71300383.ece\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">serious<\/a>\u201d about its assurance that amnesty would be granted to students who had participated in demonstrations, <em>The Hindu <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n<p>In its July 28 order, the Supreme Court had directed that minors who had been detained should be released and no coercive action should be taken against protesting students as long as they did not have any \u201ccriminal antecedents\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the bench also clarified that the term \u201ccriminal antecedents\u201d in the order referred only to \u201cgrave and heinous offences\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Cockroach Janta Party campaign on Monday said that following the Supreme Court\u2019s clarification it expects all states with Bharatiya Janata Party governments \u201cto <a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SauravDassss\/status\/2084220995313836487?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">immediately honour<\/a> the assurances given on 25 July to the young of this country\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe youth of this country honoured their word,\u201d Saurav&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/latest\/1094747\/youth-protests-supreme-court-clarifies-states-can-withdraw-firs-against-demonstrators?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=public\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: <a href='https:\/\/scroll.in\/latest\/1094747\/youth-protests-supreme-court-clarifies-states-can-withdraw-firs-against-demonstrators?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=public' target='_blank'>Read the original article on scroll.in<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court on Monday clarified that states can withdraw first information reports filed against youth protesters wherever permissible, in accordance with the law, Live Law reported.
