Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh Case Verdict: A Delhi court on Monday, August 3 acquitted former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in a case related to sexual harassment of female wrestlers. Women wrestlers had made many serious allegations against the former head of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brij Bhushan Case Verdict:<\/strong> Former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been acquitted by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court in the sexual harassment case filed by female wrestlers. Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court also acquitted Vinod Tomar, co-accused in the case along with Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.<\/p>\n

Soon after the acquittal, the 69-year-old BJP leader said that the day the allegation was made against me, I had said that if the allegation was proved, I would happily hang myself. The former MP said that today the court has acquitted me and has used the word acquitted honorably. Whatever happened, happened.<\/p>\n

Rouse Avenue Court’s Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Ashwini Panwar passed this order. According to ‘Bar and Bench’, co-accused Vinod Tomar has also been acquitted in this case. This case is related to the allegations of sexual harassment made against Singh by six female wrestlers. Based on their complaints, the police had registered an FIR against the MP.<\/p>\n

Police had filed charge sheet<\/strong><\/p>\n

On June 15, 2023, the police filed a chargesheet against Singh under sections 354 (outraging modesty), 354A (sexually colored comments), 354D (stalking) and 506(1) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). On May 10, 2024, the trial court had framed charges against Singh for sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of women for harassing five female wrestlers.<\/p>\n

It was held that there was sufficient evidence on record to frame charges against Singh for offenses punishable under sections 354 and 354A of the IPC. The court also said there was sufficient evidence to frame charges against Singh for an offense punishable under section 506(1) (criminal intimidation) of the IPC in relation to the two wrestlers.<\/p>\n

BJP leader’s first statement after acquittal<\/strong><\/p>\n

On being acquitted in the case of sexual harassment of women wrestlers, Braj Bhushan Singh told news agency ANI, “First of all, the court said that Braj Bhushan Singh and Vinod Tomar are honorably acquitted. I had said on the very first day that if any allegation is proved, I will hang myself. Today the court has given honor acquittal, it is a matter of happiness for me and my supporters.”<\/p>\n

Co-accused Vinod Tomar also acquitted<\/strong><\/p>\n

The court also charged co-accused Vinod Tomar (who is a former assistant secretary of WFI) with criminal intimidation for threatening one of the victims. A minor wrestler had also made allegations against Singh. However, he later withdrew his complaint.<\/p>\n

Delhi Police had filed a cancellation report in that case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO Act). The case was later closed. The order of Delhi Court is very important for Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. During the hearing of the case, concrete evidence could not be given on behalf of the women wrestlers. This is the same matter regarding which some women wrestlers had staged a long demonstration at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.<\/p>\n
