{"id":48534,"date":"2026-08-20T14:13:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T14:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/futureknowledge.in\/?p=48534"},"modified":"2026-08-20T14:13:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T14:13:00","slug":"boohoo-fined-e2-3m-by-french-watchdog-over-deceptive-discounts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/futureknowledge.in\/?p=48534","title":{"rendered":"Boohoo fined \u20ac2.3m by French watchdog over deceptive discounts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fashion site also broke rules on labelling by using terms \u2018leather\u2019 or \u2018suede\u2019 for synthetic products<\/p>\n<p>The British online fashion seller Boohoo has been fined \u20ac2.3m (\u00a32m) by France\u2019s consumer watchdog \u2060for deceptive \u2060practices \u200bsuch as offering fake discounts.<\/p>\n<p>The Manchester-based firm, whose parent company renamed itself Debenhams Group last year, was found to have exaggerated the discounts it was offering, giving shoppers a false impression \u2060of the savings they were making, \u200baccording to the directorate-general for competition, \u200cconsumer affairs and \u200cfraud control.<\/p>\n<p>Of \u200cthe promotions examined by the watchdog, 40% were found not to be real price reductions, 7% were a lower reduction than advertised, and 48% were a price \u200cincrease.<\/p>\n<p>Boohoo also used terms such as \u201cleather\u201d or \u201csuede\u201d to sell synthetic products, \u200bcontravening French rules on product labelling, the regulator said.<\/p>\n<p>The fine comes four years after Boohoo reached a settlement in a $100m (\u00a373m) US lawsuit that alleged the retailer used fake promotions to mislead shoppers.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement of the case, brought in California, was agreed \u201cwithout admission of liability\u201d, according to Boohoo, whose brands PrettyLittleThing and NastyGal were accused of running sham sales and promotions in the US for at least four to five years.<\/p>\n<p>The French fine comes after a rocky few years for the online seller, which has faced rising competition from cut-price rivals such as Shein, Temu and the secondhand site Vinted as well increased delivery costs and tariffs in the US.<\/p>\n<p>The group has been battling to revive sales after a boom during the Covid pandemic, when high street shops were closed.
