The main reason for this is the AI boom: large portions of DRAM production are being diverted to data centers and AI accelerators, leaving traditional PC manufacturers to struggle with rising prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trendforce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TrendForce<\/a>, prices for traditional DRAM rose by around 90 percent in the first quarter of 2026, depending on the segment. HP recently stated that RAM and SSDs now account for around 35 percent of a PC\u2019s material costs \u2013 previously, this figure hovered around 15 to 18 percent.<\/p>\n<div class=\"extendedBlock-wrapper block-coreImage undefined\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/b2c-contenthub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/RAM-optimal-TrendForce-Ausblick.png\" alt=\"RAM optimal TrendForce Ausblick\" class=\"wp-image-3145491\" width=\"989\" height=\"484\" \/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"imageCredit\">TrendForce<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one currently expects the market to stabilize any time soon. Industry analysts, on the contrary, anticipate that memory prices will remain high until at least 2027. Anyone currently buying a new PC or looking to extend the life of their existing machine with a RAM upgrade will need to budget significantly more money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a purchase or upgrade is no longer viable within your budget, tuning tricks can help make optimal use of the available memory, allowing you to carry on with 8 or 16 GB of RAM. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading toc\" id=\"check-how-much-ram-your-pc-can-actually-use\">Check how much RAM your PC can actually use<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first step towards an optimized system is a precise diagnosis of your current hardware. This allows you to determine how much of the installed memory the computer is actually permitted to use. This information can be found in the Windows System Information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can open this by pressing the <em>Win-R<\/em> key combination and entering the command <em>msinfo32<\/em> in the Run window. You can launch it using the Ctrl-Shift-Esc key combination and switch to the \u201cMemory\u201d tab in the \u201cPerformance\u201d menu. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pay attention to the display at the bottom, right below the graph. If the first number approaches this limit, the system becomes unstable and will likely crash. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading toc\" id=\"optimize-ram-via-hardware-checks-and-uefi-settings\">Optimize RAM via hardware checks and UEFI settings<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The built-in memory only helps your PC if it\u2019s working properly. You should check whether the RAM has any faults before applying any optimization measures. The quickest way to do this is using the built-in tool \u201cmdsched.exe\u201d in the Start menu. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select \u201cRestart now and check for problems\u201d to thoroughly test the RAM during the boot process. This Windows check subjects the memory to various test patterns to verify the physical integrity of each cell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This procedure is useful for assessing major defects and analyzing frequent crashes. However, if you want to go into more depth, you should use the free program <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memtest86.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MemTest86<\/a>. This allows you to detect sporadic errors or errors occurring under extreme load.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the memory is working without errors, check whether it\u2019s running with optimal settings. This tool explicitly displays \u201cDual\u201d under \u201cChannel\u201d in the \u201cMemory\u201d tab when dual-channel mode is active. If it says \u201cSingle,\u201d you must switch off the PC and swap the RAM modules around. For motherboards with four slots, it\u2019s essential for signal stability and maximum speed to place the modules in slots 2 and 4. These are usually marked on the board as A2 and B2 or in identical colors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The manual will tell you where to insert the memory modules in your PC for dual-channel operation. The correct arrangement minimizes signal reflections at the unused ends of the traces and is often a prerequisite for achieving high clock speeds stably.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can fine-tune the RAM speed in the UEFI settings. You can access these in Windows via \u201cSettings &gt; System &gt; Recovery\u201d and by clicking \u201cRestart now\u201d under \u201cAdvanced startup.\u201d After rebooting, select \u201cTroubleshoot,\u201d \u201cAdvanced options,\u201d and \u201cUEFI Firmware Settings.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"extendedBlock-wrapper block-coreImage undefined\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/b2c-contenthub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/RAM-optimal-Bios_DOCP.jpg?quality=50&amp;strip=all\" alt=\"RAM optimal Bios DOCP\" class=\"wp-image-3145497\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"imageCredit\">Asus<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look for memory profile options in the settings. On systems with an Intel CPU, these are usually found under \u201cXMP\u201d (Extreme Memory Profile). On systems with an AMD CPU, you\u2019ll find them under \u201cEXPO\u201d (Extended Profiles for Overclocking). <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On Asus motherboards, in the \u201cAi Tweaker\u201d menu. <\/li>\n<li>On MSI, under \u201cOC.\u201d <\/li>\n<li>On Gigabyte, in the \u201cTweaker\u201d tab. <\/li>\n<li>On ASRock, under \u201cOC Tweaker.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enable the appropriate profile (usually \u201cProfile 1\u201d) to unlock the maximum speed and optimized timings. Otherwise, the memory will often run at slower default speeds. Save the changes using the F10 key and confirm the restart so the performance gains take effect.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading toc\" id=\"find-and-disable-programs-that-consume-too-much-ram\">Find and disable programs that consume too much RAM<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many programs that consume memory are not immediately obvious. Memory shortages during operation are often caused not by the software you are actively using, but by the background processes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should sort the running processes on your PC by their memory usage. To do this, open the Task Manager and click on the \u201cMemory\u201d section in the top row. Under \u201cName,\u201d you will see the active programs listed by memory usage. The browser is often at the top, along with other open programs like your email client or Office software. To track down hidden reservations, right-click on any column header, select \u201cSelect Columns,\u201d and tick the \u201cCommitted Size\u201d box. This column now shows you the exact amount of virtual memory that a program has reserved \u2013 this is often far greater than the RAM currently in use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To free up memory, you can also disable built-in features that constantly consume resources that are not essential for the PC\u2019s operation. This includes, for example, the news and weather display in the taskbar. While informative, it constantly uses memory via the \u201cWidgets.exe\u201d process. You can turn them off by right-clicking the taskbar, then selecting \u201cTaskbar settings\u201d and disabling \u201cWidgets.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same applies to search indexing, which catalogues your files in the background so you can find them more quickly. You can save RAM here by setting the mode to \u201cClassic\u201d in the Windows settings under \u201cPrivacy and Security &gt; Search &gt; Search My Documents.\u201d You can also exclude folders from indexing by clicking on \u201cAdd folders to exclude\u201d and selecting the desired directories in File Explorer. This saves RAM, but results in longer wait times when searching for files.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also services in Windows that can be disabled without any loss of functionality. You can launch the Services program by typing <em>services.msc<\/em> into the Windows search box. Then search for the entry \u201cSysMain\u201d and double-click to open its properties. Under \u201cStartup type,\u201d select \u201cDisabled\u201d from the drop-down menu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This service, formerly known as Superfetch, analyzes programs and loads them into RAM in advance to speed up their launch. Disabling the service frees up memory. Here, too, you\u2019ll find settings to reduce RAM usage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, you can enable the built-in power-saving features. In Edge, go to \u201cSettings &gt; System and performance\u201d and look for the option \u201cAutomatically put tabs to sleep\u201d in the \u201cPerformance\u201d section. The content of inactive tabs is removed from RAM and only reloaded when you click on them again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firefox users should enter <em>about:config<\/em> in the browser address bar and set the value of \u201cbrowser.tabs.loadInBackground\u201d to \u201cfalse.\u201d This prevents tabs opened in the background from taking up RAM. They are only loaded when you select them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Windows 11, disabling AI features frees up memory. Recall, for example, regularly takes snapshots of your screen to create a searchable history. This is handy, but it constantly consumes resources and poses privacy risks. To disable Recall, search for \u201cPowerShell\u201d in the Start menu, right-click the entry, and select \u201cRun as administrator.\u201d Now enter <em>Dism\/Online \/Disable-Feature\/Featurename:Recall<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can disable Copilot in Windows 11 Pro via the Group Policy Editor, which you can launch by pressing Win-R and entering the command <em>gpedit.msc<\/em>. Navigate to \u201cUser Configuration &gt; Administrative Templates &gt; Windows Components &gt; Windows Copilot\u201d and set \u201cDisable Windows Copilot\u201d to \u201cEnabled.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Windows 11 Home, open the Registry Editor via Win-R and the command regedit, confirm with \u201cYes,\u201d and navigate to the left-hand directory tree. Follow the path \u201cHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the \u201cWindowsCopilot\u201d subfolder is missing, create it by right-clicking on the Windows folder and selecting \u201cNew\u201d and then \u201cKey.\u201d Then right-click in the right-hand pane, select \u201cNew,\u201d then \u201cDWORD (32-bit) Value,\u201d and name it <em>TurnOffWindowsCopilot<\/em>. Double-click to set the value to \u201c1\u201d and this will permanently terminate the background processes after a restart.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading toc\" id=\"use-the-page-file-as-a-ram-safety-net\">Use the page file as a RAM safety net<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the system\u2019s RAM runs low despite the optimization measures outlined above, the page file (pagefile.sys) on the SSD acts as a safety net. Never disable this file, as this will lead to instability and crashes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To optimize the configuration, open the System Properties via Win-R using the command <em>sysdm.cpl<\/em> and navigate to the \u201cAdvanced\u201d tab. Under \u201cPerformance,\u201d click \u201cSettings,\u201d switch to \u201cAdvanced\u201d in the new window, and select the \u201cChange\u201d button under \u201cVirtual memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, uncheck the box for automatic management and select your fastest SSD drive. Set the option to \u201cCustom size\u201d and enter the same value for both the initial and maximum size (around 1.5 to 3 times your RAM). This prevents Windows from having to dynamically increase the file size, which reduces the processing load and SSD fragmentation.
