Part of the Los Angeles Police Department's headquarters was closed after a letter containing an unidentified suspicious substance was found in the building's mailroom. The substance was discovered shortly before 07:00 local time on Tuesday, when workers found a letter suspected of containing dangerous material, police officials said.<\/p>\n
The workers alerted emergency response teams, prompting a hazardous materials unit to attend the scene.<\/p>\n
Mailroom staff were evacuated, along with adjoining areas including the police centre. Fire units also closed roads around the headquarters at 100 W First St as officers investigated the contents of the letter.<\/p>\n
Police were unable to identify the substance and said they had no further details about the suspicious mail.<\/p>\n
Most of the headquarters remained open, however, and a scheduled Los Angeles Police Commission meeting was still taking place at about 09:30. \u201cThe show must go on,\u201d one officer said.<\/p>\n
Police are continuing to investigate the incident.<\/p>\n
