A lot has changed since then, so much so that the so-called horsepower wars don’t carry as much weight today, given that several EVs now produce more than 1,000 hp.

Now, Porsche has taken EV performance in an SUV package to the next level with the all-electric Cayenne. While its initial specifications were already impressive on paper, Car and Driver recently tested the Cayenne Turbo Electric and found that it outperformed all of its SUV rivals – and even some traditional performance cars such as the Lamborghini Revuelto.

Porsche

The Numbers Behind the Test

In acceleration testing, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric – the range-topping version with a 1,140-horsepower dual-motor setup – logged a zero-to-60-mph sprint in 2.1 seconds, beating the manufacturer’s estimate of 2.4 seconds. In Car and Driver’s testing, the all-electric Cayenne beat the tri-motor Rivian R1S (2.8 seconds), Lucid Gravity Dream Edition (3.1 seconds), and the non-Plaid Tesla Model X (3.3 seconds).

Even the Lamborghini Revuelto and Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 were beaten by a tenth of a second. Other acceleration feats include reaching 100 mph in 4.5 seconds and 150 mph in 10.1 seconds, and completing the quarter-mile in 9.5 seconds at 146 mph.

One concern surrounding performance EVs is their weight, as large battery packs can add substantial mass. While that can affect braking performance, the Cayenne Turbo Electric – weighing 5,960 pounds – managed to stop from 70 mph in 140 feet. That’s 10 feet and 12 feet shorter than the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT and Lamborghini Urus Performante, respectively. Equipped with the optional $10,900 carbon-ceramic brakes, the Cayenne Turbo Electric also matched the braking performance of the much lighter Corvette ZR1.

The Porsche EV also secured the all-time SUV roadholding record in Car and Driver testing at 1.05 g on the skidpad, dethroning the Urus Performante, which recorded 1.04 g.

Porsche

A Sensible Super-SUV?

For that much performance, the test vehicle stickered at $194,600. That may already sound like a bargain for buyers willing to swap a combustion-powered performance SUV for an EV, especially when the Lamborghini Urus starts at more than $240,000.

Built in Bratislava, Slovakia, the Cayenne Turbo Electric starts at $163,000, excluding the destination charge, while the base model begins at $109,000. Beyond outright performance, the EV is also available with an optional 11-kW wireless charging system that operates at up to 90% grid-to-battery efficiency.

Porsche

View the 3 images of this gallery on the
original article

Source: Read the original article on www.autoblog.com

Performance Has Been Rewired When electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model S started beating supercars in the 2010s, some combustion purists were still in denial about the performance capabilities of EVs.
