Read our privacy notice.<\/p>\n<p>Developers of the Rosebank oil field have welcomed the closure of a consultation as a \u201cmajor step\u201d ahead of a final decision from the UK Government on whether the project can go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Environmental activists fear the impact that extracting fossil fuels from the UK\u2019s largest remaining untapped oil field \u2013 which lies about 80 miles west of Shetland \u2013\u00a0 would have on climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The decision on whether Rosebank and another planned North Sea development, the Jackdaw gas field off the coast of Aberdeen, can go ahead will be a key environmental test for Prime Minister Andy Burnham.<\/p>\n<p>The proposals are both now in the hands of ministers, with the consultation on Jackdaw having closed a week ago<\/p>\n<p>Bosses at Adura, the company behind both projects, said they would\u00a0result in \u00a310.8 billion of investment \u2013 with more than three quarters of this cash expected to be spent in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Between them, Rosebank and Jackdaw could\u00a0support 3,500 jobs at\u00a0the peak of construction, with 880\u00a0people then employed over the lifetime of production.<\/p>\n<p>Adura added that Rosebank alone\u00a0is projected to produce about 69,000 barrels of oil per day at its peak,\u00a0with this the equivalent to roughly 10% of the anticipated\u00a0output from the UK Continental Shelf.<\/p>\n<p>And the company said\u00a0Rosebank and Jackdaw together have the potential to make up 10% of domestic natural gas production.<\/p>\n<p>However, environmentalists claim that Rosebank would produce more than 250 million tonnes of CO2 \u2013 equivalent to 70% of UK annual emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The decision on the two projects comes after a summer which has seen soaring temperatures in both the UK and Europe, as well as wildfires in both Britain and the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Palmer, deputy director at Uplift, which campaigns for a transition away from fossil fuels, said: \u201cWhile the oil and gas industry does everything in its power to push Burnham into Trump\u2019s drill baby, drill agenda, the nation\u2019s new Prime Minister has watched the UK and Europe burn baby, burn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Angela Rayner promises action to tackle housing crisis with planning shake-up<\/p>\n<p>Decision on Jackdaw and Rosebank could be \u2018life or death\u2019 in North Sea \u2013 Tories<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: <a href='https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/politics\/uk-government-aberdeen-north-sea-government-prime-minister-b1293620.html' target='_blank'>Read the original article on www.standard.co.uk<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Get our award-winning daily news email featuring exclusive stories, opinion and expert analysis I would like to be emailed about offers, event and updates from Evening Standard.
