Now, the clean energy resource has proved it can also bolster the grid during major heat&nbsp;waves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, as dangerously hot and humid temperatures settled over the eastern United States, two wind projects near New England consistently delivered hundreds of megawatts to the grid as residents cranked up their air conditioners. The influx of wind reduced utilities\u2019 reliance on dirty, expensive oil-burning peaker plants, which operate only when electricity demand is through the roof, according to the data firm&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gridstatus.io\/live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grid Status<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">Analysts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gridstatus.io\/insights\/48802321030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compared<\/a>\u00a0how the regional system performed during the July heat wave and a\u00a0sweltering stretch in June\u00a02025, before much of the current offshore wind capacity came online. Oil provided nearly\u00a010 percent of the region\u2019s total power supply during peak-demand conditions on July\u00a02,\u00a02026\u00a0\u2014 that period\u2019s hottest day \u2014 down from nearly\u00a015 percent at the highest point on June\u00a024,\u00a02025. That\u2019s a\u00a0drop of more than a\u00a0gigawatt in oil-fueled generation between those two\u00a0days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the decline was due to slightly weaker overall demand during the July&nbsp;2&nbsp;peak than during last year\u2019s event. But Grid Status said that stronger generation from the region\u2019s utility-scale offshore wind farms was a&nbsp;key factor. Meanwhile, an abundance of rooftop solar installations&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainepublic.org\/climate\/2026-07-12\/rooftop-solar-eases-new-englands-electric-demand-in-heat-wave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">significantly eased<\/a>&nbsp;overall electricity demand during the heat&nbsp;wave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven if total demand was in line with last year, we would still be hundreds of megawatts below what the total [peak oil] burn would\u2019ve been,\u201d said Tim Ennis, a&nbsp;Grid Status analyst in Boston.&nbsp;\u200b\u201cWe didn\u2019t have to turn the oil on as hard at lunchtime because we had the wind and [hydropower line] online as&nbsp;well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">Ennis noted that offshore wind is often&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canarymedia.com\/articles\/offshore-wind\/grid-reliability-east-coast-trump-study\">touted by experts<\/a>&nbsp;for its ability to bolster grid reliability during winter. New England\u2019s power system is becoming&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso-ne.com\/about\/key-stats\/electricity-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increasingly constrained<\/a>&nbsp;in colder months, owing to the shift to electric space and water heating systems. Ocean winds in the region are at their strongest and steadiest during the season, meaning offshore turbines can help meet some of that growing electricity demand and reduce stress on gas-fueled power plants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">While wind speeds are generally lower during summer, the recent heat wave confirms that the projects still play a&nbsp;meaningful role on the hottest days \u2014 more of which are headed for the region this&nbsp;week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;806-MW&nbsp;Vineyard Wind, off the coast of Massachusetts, finished construction in March, and its developer had activated&nbsp;49&nbsp;of its&nbsp;62&nbsp;turbines&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newbedfordlight.org\/offshore-wind-tracker-whats-happening-to-massachusetts-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as of early May<\/a>. All told, New England operators produced\u00a042.2\u00a0gigawatt-hours of oil-fired power during that four-day heat wave, down\u00a037 percent from the total oil burned from June\u00a023\u00a0to\u00a025,\u00a02025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">Outside New England, the already completed&nbsp;132-MW&nbsp;South Fork Wind farm had a&nbsp;strong showing off the coast of New York. The project, which came online in&nbsp;2024, operated at nearly full capacity on July&nbsp;2, sending electricity into the heat-stressed grid on Long Island, Mikkel M\u00e6hlisen of \u00d8rsted, which jointly owns South Fork Wind with Skyborn Renewables,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/mikkel-maehlisen-68b1b97_during-one-of-the-hottest-stretches-of-the-activity-7481294773866143744-WqgV?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAIjXkYBVzoeGe5kN6Cs7ZYxGDGJHoXT3mw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently wrote on LinkedIn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">The Independent System Operator New England has previously stressed the role that offshore wind can play in supporting the grid during extreme heat events. But its developer \u00d8rsted was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canarymedia.com\/articles\/offshore-wind\/bonkers-doi-letter-halts-all-five-in-progress-offshore-wind-farms\">forced to hit the brakes<\/a>&nbsp;again in December after Trump\u2019s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management paused the leases for all five large-scale U.S. offshore wind projects under construction.
