So, does that mean eating too much protein is harmful?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have this impression that dietary protein is sort of a universally good thing,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicine.wisc.edu\/directory\/lamming_dudley\">Dudley Lamming<\/a> at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. But according to the latest review of the evidence, \u201cincreasing dietary protein, beyond what\u2019s needed, for sedentary individuals or animals leads to metabolic problems and can lead to shorter lifespan as well\u201d, he says.<\/p>\n<div class=\"read-more__standard wp-block-newscientist-read-more\">\n\t\t<a class=\"read-more__standard--wrapper no-animation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2579544-your-body-changes-as-you-age-and-so-should-your-diet-heres-how\/\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<strong>Read more<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your body changes as you age and so should your diet \u2013 here\u2019s how\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But others point out that nutritional studies in animals like mice and rats don\u2019t readily translate to people, and a high protein intake has been linked to benefits in humans.<\/p>\n<div class=\"advert-wrapper advert__mid-article\">\n<div class=\"advert\">\n<div class=\"advert__inner\">\n<p class=\"advert__copy\">\n\t\t\t\t\tAdvertisement\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<div class=\"advert__slot\" id=\"mid-article-slot\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tif( window?.adverts?.addToArray ) {<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\twindow.adverts.addToArray( {<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t&#8220;pos&#8221;: &#8220;mid-article-slot&#8221;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t} );<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t}<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lamming and his colleagues sifted through more than 300 studies, mostly in sedentary rodents, that explored how restricting protein intake to the minimum required to prevent deficiency affects ageing and lifespan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In these studies, rodents generally either ate the equivalent of the minimum protein requirement recommended by US guidelines \u2013 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight \u2013 or about double that. The latter is similar to the intake recently recommended by US dietary guidelines for optimal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/subject\/health\/\">health<\/a>, 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one study, rats that ate around the minimum protein intake lived nearly 120 days, or more than 50 per cent, longer than those that ate about double that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may be because protein restriction increases levels of the hormone FGF21, says Lamming. In rodents, this acts on the brain, fat tissue and the liver to improve blood sugar levels and reduce the number of senescent cells. Studies suggest this <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19797661\/\">cuts the risk of age-related conditions and extends lifespan<\/a> in mice, he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All this suggests that the recent trend to up our protein intake is probably fine among people who exercise regularly, because they may need more protein to repair muscle damage, but eating more than is needed could cause harm in sedentary individuals, says Lamming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifm.org\/presenter\/donald-layman\">Donald Layman<\/a> at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign points out that rodents vary hugely from people when it comes to protein metabolism. For instance, mTORC1 is activated by feeding, and while people tend to a have a few big meals a day, rodents graze more regularly. Protein restriction may therefore affect mTORC1 pathways differently between the different species, he says. We are also more exposed to factors that accelerate ageing, like infections and extreme heat, than lab animals, says Layman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s more, the review does not include most of the studies in people that suggest that upping our protein intake beyond the minimum <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41204398\/\">cuts our risk of\u00a0frailty<\/a>, he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dudley says no studies were intentionally omitted. \u201cWe were focused on protein restriction, not the many studies looking at higher levels of protein intake,\u201d he says. Donald Layman is one of the people behind the research showing the benefits of getting more protein in your diet, but he thinks things have gone too far and wants to set the record straight\n<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, one study linked this to a reduced risk of age-related muscle loss, or sarcopenia, among <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36800504\/\">older twins in the UK<\/a>.
